Sand
Dragons 0 vs.
Samba 3
|
The
last match of the 2003 Fall SUASL Season...and what a shame
it's over. The Sand Dragons met Samba in what was to be
the final match of the season. An outright win was the only
thing that could keep the Sandymen alive in the playoffs.
The
first 20 minutes showed the Sand Dragons playing well but
their lack of finishing held them back as the game progressed.
Samba scored their first goal at 30 minutes as the ball
came down into the Dragons defensive area and was crossed
into the middle. The ball deflected off a Samba player's
shin as he was attempting a shot but the ball still managed
to trickle into the corner as the Dragons keeper went sprawling
after it.
Their
second came in the second half as Roel Bazuin took down
a Samba forward in the box. The ref wasted no time as he
pointed to the spot. Samba put it away and it was 2 nil
Samba.
Still
with plenty of time and try as they might, the Sandymen
tried to put it all together hoping they just might put
enough together to put one in.
The
final goal came in the dying minutes of the match leaving
no further hopes for the beaten crew. Both sides had chances
although Samba had many more. The constant pressure from
the Samba offense with 4 balls that hit the bar or post
was just too much for the Sand Dragons defense to hold back
on the day.
Post
match injury report shows Mark Jensen with a couple of broken
ribs from being kicked by a Samba player late in the second
half. The injury took him out for the rest of the match.
Man
of the Match goes to Kiko Fierin, who stayed on the
sidelines the entire match and ran the subs well for the
home team.

Sand
Dragons 2 vs.
Incinerators 2
|
The
long awaited match vs. Incinerators was finally here. Sunday
was warm and sunny. Just what the Football Gods ordered.
Both teams anxious for a win and both needing the 3 points.
With
plenty of history between the clubs, the game started with
both sides evenly matched. It was the Sand
Dragons that struck first with a goal after about 20
minutes or so. The first goal started from a goal kick and
was flicked on by Geordie Wood to Andy Honker who earlier
missed an opportunity. This time Big Andy took the ball
and moved to the top of the Incinerator box and hit a left
footed shot full gun into the back of the net. 1 nil Sandymen.
With
only a few minutes past the Sand Dragons were caught napping
as a ball came over from the touchline and was flicked to
the back post just outside the goalbox. The oncoming Incinerator
forward came in unabated and as the Dragon keeper moved
across the goal area he threw himself forward to stop the
ball from going over him, but instead the ball went under
and dribbled into the net as the Dragons defensive line
tried to get back and clear the ball off the line. It was
1-1 and the momentum seemed to change.
The
rest of the half and for most of the second half both sides
had their chances with neither converting. With about 10
minutes to go an Incinerator forward was foolishly fouled
on top of the box and the ensuing free kick resulted in
a goal. 2-1 Incinerators.
Then
only 2 minutes later Geordie Wood stood outside the Incinerator
box awaiting a goal kick when low and behold...the kick
went surprisingly close to Geordie who corralled the ball
and made like a bandit towards the goalmouth. On his third
attempt (take a shot...rest, take another...rest, take the
third...Goal!) he scored the equalizer and the game was
once again tied.
With
only a few minutes left, neither side would give and the
final score was 2-2.
Geordie
Wood is the Sand Dragons Man of
the Match for his heroic goal that keeps the Sandymen
in the Hunt for the final Playoff spot in the Division.

Venom
4 vs. Dynamo 1
Team
Venom's game with Dynamo didn't put a chance at a
championship on the line. Not even a chance at the playoffs.
It was just about pride and satisfaction. It has been
a tough season for the lads. With only a few games remaining
there are fewer league points available... and still fewer
chances to actually take the points. Everyone was hungry
for the victory, especially SDFC Co-founder and team orator
Albert Mercado, who gave the pre-game speech, emphasizing
pride, honor and respect.
The
weather was perfect... not much wind, cool and getting
cooler as the sun set to the west. Dynamo won the toss
and chose the west end so we kicked off. They would only
have eleven players, no substitutes for breathers. Venom
was without Wizo, Stevie D, Romulo, Tall, Dennis, Big
Paul, Rudy T, Big Mike and Marty. Thanks goodness for
a large roster.
Both
teams started a little flat but play picked up about ten
minutes into the game. The formation had changed a little
to take advantage of a strong midfield and the blazing
speed of Mark "Chambo" Chambers. It paid off 15 minutes
into the game when "Rocket" Rob Heuer carried the ball
down the right side and centered it perfectly. Chambo
took the shot from so close that he hit the keeper in
the thighs. He recovered quickly and tapped it in for
the goal. Chambo ran hard all day, playing one of his
best games of the season. But the real control story of
the day would be Rocket Rob. Every possession, Rocket
carried the ball into the red zone, pushed it into the
18 yard box or fired off a shot.
Dynamo's
only goal would come only a few minutes later when their
star player found his way past the defense and blasted
one past the keeper, James"Starfish" Cagle (also known
as "Be kind" and Mr. MGD). The Starfish would make several
nice saves on the day but for the most part the defense
played tough and kept him out of trouble.
Vince
"Flea" Nagy would get the next goal, putting Venom on
top for good. Flea is small, quick and very irritating
to defenses. He found the ball ready for striking about
12 yards out and nailed it to the back of the goal. He
would get several more opportunities on the day.
About
five minutes later, Rocket Rob carried the ball all the
way down the field, making their defense look like a U-8
squad. Then capped it off by beating the charging keeper
and easily tapping the ball into the goal. He's so skilled
that he makes it look easy and he's done it that way all
season.
With
15 minutes left in the game, Venom would score the last
goal of the day. The ball was pushed up the left side
by the ever steady and cool David Millar-Haskell. Scott
Wolfe would receive the ball and play it forward to Rocket
Rob. Rocket played the ball perfectly to Will Bullock
about 25 yards out. Will turned and carried the ball to
the top of the 18 and then put the ball through at the
last minute to Flea Nagy. Flea found himself one on one
with a rolling ball perfectly at his feet only 8 yards
out. The keeper was flat and helpless. The ball found
the back of the net in premier fashion. From defense,
through the midfield and into the net... it was a sweet
goal.
Players
worth mentioning that elevated their game were Yigael
Cohen and Paul Beckstead. Yigael, playing on the front
line, found himself with the ball and a shooting opportunity
more than once. Paul also played a little harder, keeping
goal-side of his man and giving a solid effort. I'm sure
his whole family being at the game had no influence on
his play. Their attending regular practices has improved
their conditioning, skill and confidence. Well done. Keep
to it.
As
for Man of the Match, for
the second time this season it goes to Captain Vince "Flea"
Nagy for superior skill in the midfield... and the two
goals didn't hurt either. We all appreciate your dedication
and leadership. Just try to remember the little people
that pass you the ball.
Final
game of the season will be played on December 7th at 10:00
am against the division leading Blasters. Please be there
to show your support. I'm sure we'll need it.

Sand
Dragons 2 vs.
Payson SC 3
|
It was a 4 pm game last Sunday with the Sand
Dragons fielding all but 2 of their players for the
match against the season's surprising turnaround team, Payson
SC.
The game started with both sides playing fast and hard.
The Sandymen
were the first to score as Roel Bazuin got the assist to
Steve Bruns. Steve received the ball about 30 yards out,
moved it forward and took a great shot at the bottom left
corner and the ball went blazing past the diving Payson
keeper.
The half continued with the Payson side putting together
some dangerous attacks. The Sand Dragons nearly scored their
second as the Payson keeper made a good save off a strong
header from midfielder Thong Nguyen. The half ended 1 nil
Sand Dragons.
As the second half progressed both sides put together good
series of possession time. Payson scored their first goal
when the Sand Dragons keeper, who may have been a bit too
enthusiastic, bowled over a Payson forward on a corner kick
with neither of them getting to the ball. The ball lay inside
the goal box for only a second when a Payson player nailed
home the goal through a medley of players with the Dragons
keeper laying outstretched but inches from the ball and
four Dragon players behind him on the line.
Payson scored a second on a counter attack that had more
Payson players in the box than Sand Dragons. As the Dragon's
keeper covered the near post shot, the Payson wing put the
ball over the keeper and as the ball hit the inside of the
far post only the keeper and a Payson player were following
it's trajectory and unfortunately for the Dragons their
keeper was also trailing a Payson forward who ultimately
put the ball into the goal. 2 -1 Payson SC with 20 minutes
to go.
The Sandymen put on a fierce game of possession and hard
tackling and on an ensuing attack Thong was hacked down
in the Payson box. No doubt in the referee's mind as he
pointed to the spot.
Geordie Wood stepped up to take the penalty against the
Payson keeper. As Geordie took his run up he looked the
keeper left all the way and as he handsomely struck the
ball to the right, the Payson keeper went left and it was
2-2.
With 10 minutes remaining both sides were fiercely contending
and as the Sand Dragon's keeper made a diving save to his
left he couldn't manage to keep it within his grasp and
a hungry Payson forward came rushing in to blast home the
winning goal.
The remaining game saw both sides with sound attacking
play as both keepers made saves to keep either team from
scoring any more goals and it ended 3-2 Payson.
AS the game ended it was clear that the Payson side wanted
"It" more than the Dragon's did, scraping for
every goal at every opportunity. The post
game MOM committee had a hard time finding a solid Man
of the Match in this game, so this writer will choose the
Sand Dragon's Goalkeeper as the Goat
of the Game as his normally magnetic hands failed him
and his team, enabling the Payson side to snatch their winning
goal.

Venom
1 vs. Samba 5
The weather. Perfect this time of year...
for anything. Especially a nice game of footie. And on
this Sunday, Venom
would play Samba. A very tough opponent every time. Pedro's
boys showed up late and they started with seven players.
But eventually they did show up and show up big they did.
With a four man advantage, Venom did a good
job with possession and moving the ball up field. Samba
played tough back on defense to hold off the pushes into
their end. As the game started two Samba players dressed
out and took the field within the first five minutes.
Ten minutes into the game, one of the Venom wingers delivered
a nice ball to Rob "Rocket" Heuer dead in the middle of
the field. Rocket carried the ball forward 15 yards and
tried a through ball to Will Bullock on the right wing.
The ball was deflected and the Samba defender kicked it
back to keeper. The keeper didn't control the ball well
and sent to ball right out in front of the goal. Venom
midfielder, Vince Nagy following up in text book fashion,
ran onto the ball and went one on one with the keeper.
It was a perfect shot to the left side netting. The keeper
never had a chance... but he wouldn't be tested many more
times.
Twenty-five minutes into the game, Samba
had a full squad on the field and even some substitutes.
In short order they took full advantage of their speed
and skill, pushing deep into the Venom end. One one trip
deep into the box, a defender ran into the back of the
Samba player with the ball. The linesman awarded a PK.
The kick went right, Venom keeper, James Cagle, went left.
It was one to one but we were playing well. At the half,
teams went to the sidelines tied at one each.
Lately it's seemed that Venom really knows
what to do in the first half. But there is always the
second half. Samba came out hard and made some really
great shots. It wasn't as if the Venom defense folded
and gave them gifts of goals. These were well played,
well timed, well hit shots. Their horses just out ran
our horses. The bleeding finally stopped at five to one,
Samba. The game was a loss but clean and everyone had
a fair amount of playing time. Even with the loss, it
was thought that everyone enjoyed the day.
The Man of the
Match goes to Game Captain Vince Nagy and also to defenseman
Scott Wolfe. Both played very well, Vince scoring the
only Venom goal and working the field hard for the whole
game. He never subbed once and ran his tail off. Scott
provided the skills needed in the middle defense that
were missing with Rudy Torres out of town. It would have
been MUCH worse without his assistance on the back line.
Late in the second half, Scott kicked a pretty hard ball
out of bounds and broke the windshield out of a car. It
just happened to be the vehicle that belonged to the linesman
that awarded the penalty kick. You think it was justice
of the soccer lords, officials of the next realm? He was
very unfavorable in Payson too. Funny how things happened,
don't you think?
Special thanks to our "fans" on the sidelines.
Your being there encourages us to be better. We hope to
provide you better results in the future. Next week we
play Dynamo at 4pm. This should be a good game as they
are more closely matched to our teams skill and record.

Sand
Dragons 3 vs.
Venom 1
|
It was
time for the Fall season's inter-club Derby this past Sunday,
and a fine match it was. The Sand
Dragons side was ready for a good match, although missing
7 players, as Team Venom/Vipers/Sidewinders always plays
tough in this game no matter what they change their name
to.
It was
a scoreless 1st half as both sides worked hard to gain the
majority of possession time. The Sand Dragons had a couple
of attempts making the Venom keeper come up with one good
save for the half. The rest of the half was taken up with
battles in the midfield.
Although
a bit frustrated at half-time, due to the lack of goals,
the Sandymen knew it was just a matter of time.
The
second half started with the Sand Dragons playing a more
controlled, possession style of game. It wasn't until well
into the half that the first goal was struck. "The turning
point was when the amusement arcade came on after 20 minutes".
The Sand Dragons keeper and back 4 "showed a bit of
frustration as the amusement arcade lollipopped them."
The
Dragons keeper moved out of the box to the touchline to
send a thru ball back up the field. And although he hit
the ball to the half line the Venom defense punched the
ball back to the top of the Sand Dragon's penalty box and
the Dragon's back 4 were caught watching cartoons. As the
Dragon's keeper moved in for the ensuing collision at the
top of the box, Venom forward Dennis Wodarz showed that
he was ready for anything. As the two met Wodarz got his
foot under the ball and the resulting deflection off the
keeper's shingaurds went spinning high and over stopper,
Glennon Miller, who had positioned himself on the line.
As the spinning ball arced toward the goal it was too much
for Glennon to get his hand on to force a penalty kick.
It was 1 nil Venom.
Enough was enough and the Sandymen
took over the majority of possession time playing balls
to the feet and getting a number of opportunities on attack.
It was Johnny Ridgway that put in the first goal as he received
the ball From Kiko Fierin on a cross, chest trapped it down
and neatly finished the ball past the Venom keeper as everyone
watched with anticipation.
Before the kickoff, big Andy Honker gathered everyone on
the field for a quick talk and called it right as the Venom
team disintegrated.
Minutes
later, the winning goal came from Scotty Harelson who was
having a good game at right midfield on the day. The cross
came from Kiko, who lost 2 toe nails on a corner kick that
found Scotty in front of the goal. Scotty left no doubt
with a powerful header into the back of the net.
Then
with 5 minutes left, after a great long ball downfield from
Roel, "Big Andy won a spotter's badge for his Hollywood
ball" from the touchline as "a crowd scene appeared
at the back post." It looked like the entire Sandymen
side was going for the ball and "Forrest hit that one
full gun" into the top of the net after the tremendous
arrive.
A very good showing from several players. In addition to
the lads that scored, Andy Honker, Geordie Wood, Kiko Fierin,
Mike Levario, Roel Bazuin, Glennon Miller, Colin Smith,
Dieter Welle, and Milton Melo all played pretty good and
gave 110%. But for his tough play, hard tackling and relentless
pursuit, Rock n' Roel Bazuin gets the Sandymen's Man
of the Match award this week.
And
for the record books...it's Sand Dragons undefeated
over the VenomVipersSidewinder team for the 4th season in
a row.
A Special
Sandymen Salute and Thanks goes to Carole Forrest for her
outstanding efforts towards the SDFC Club Picnic. Despite
several hurdles she managed to make it a really Great Day!
Way to go Carole!

Cobras
1 vs. Suicide
Kings 3
Venom
1 vs. Sand Dragons 3
Since
the birth of this Club the Dragon Squad has been given
advantage to offer a competitive side so that Sand Dragons
FC could and would put up winning scores. Up to now, they
haven't even made the playoffs... but we are all hopeful.
The Viper Squad was always to be a home for the players
that didn't make the Dragons. But that wasn't good enough
for men with heart and courage, passionate about their
soccer and dedicated enough to work hard to raise the
level of play. With a renewed dedication to having a winning
season Venom looks
to change it's stars with it's name... not to be taken
for granted, for those that do will find themselves on
bottom.
With
two teams in one division there positive and negative
issues... depending on how you look at it. The team called
Venom sees an opportunity to do something great... to
succeed where none thought they could. The game this day
would be all that our season was about. Win our loose
we would give all we had and feel good about the outcome.
It was ours to win and theirs to loose. With no breakdowns,
we could get it done.
The
Venom started the game without star forward Rob "Rocket"
Heuer, out with a severely injured shooting foot. Star
midfielder Marty Weisbrodt was also out with a hamstring
injury and he walked the sideline supporting his team.
All other players would step up to the plate and see the
job done. Several key changes were made in the lineup.
Stevie Desjardins moved to the back line to offer speed
to the size already found in Chaz Kasinicky to stop up
the offensive transition deep in our defensive end. It
was a great move as the first half ended with no goals
by either side. There were a few deep pushes by each team
but no really serious attempts on goal. Vince Nagy and
Rudy Torres did a great job of controlling the middle
of the field for 35 minutes of the first half. It was
obvious the Dragons were irritated at being held scoreless
by a team they view as inferior. They were pressured to
the point they couldn't string two passes together. It
would get worse in the second half.
The
second half started with both teams playing about the
same. Venom with possession, Dragons tough on defense.
About 25 minutes into the second half, Rudy Torres won
the ball in a 50/50, moved up the middle of the field
and placed an absolutely perfect pass to Dennis Wodarz.
Dennis had just stepped on the field and was fresh. He
raced past the defenders and closed on the Dragon keeper
who was without help and going to have to do this one
on one. At the last minute, the keeper went to the slide
and Dennis kicked the ball, deflecting off the keeper
and over the head of the covering defenseman on the goal
line. It was One to Zero, Venom! Who would have believed
it?
The
lead situation seemed to irritate the Dragon boys. It
was akin to kicking a bees nest... and within 10 minutes
they scored the equalizer. There was some confusion in
the Venom defense and John Ridgway took full advantage,
passing the keeper for the point. The goal seemed to kick
the Venom defense in the groin, leaving them out of position
and frustrated. This time Scott Harelson would be the
recipient of a nice cross. He would take full advantage
putting the Dragons up 2 to 1. With the lead change the
Dragons seemed to have renewed confidence. In Five minutes
the lead had flip flopped. The Best goal of the day by
the Dragons came off a corner kick. The ball was centered
perfectly to Kiko Fierin who deflected the ball past the
keeper but in front of the back post. Maybe the only earned
goal of the day, but no matter, they had the game well
in hand.
The
final few minutes presented a few nice offensive tries
and on one corner, the ball was pushed in perfectly by
Rudy Torres. Dragon captain Nigel Forrest went up for
the ball but missed and hit at the ball with his hand
but the ref didn't see it. There would be no penalty kick.
The remainder of the game, Venom wouldn't get any breaks.
Several players had fine performances, you know who you
are. The game pretty much ended with Venom pushing deep
but no goal.
Man
of the Match goes to Dennis Wodarz. Dennis scored
the only goal and also did all the cooking for the club
picnic. The Venom loved his goal... everyone loved his
cooking. I'd also like to declare a special award, Woman
of the Match/Day to Carole Forrest. Without her organization
and hard work we wouldn't have enjoyed the day half as
much. It was one of the best picnics yet and Carole is
to blame. Well done, Carole.

It was
the undefeated Blasters over the Sand
Dragons in last Sunday's match.
After
4 wins in a row the Sand Dragons felt ready for the days
match and knew it was going to be hard fought.
The
first half's play saw the Blasters with most of the possession
handling the midfield well and putting direct pressure on
the Sandymen's defense.
The
turning point was when the amusement arcade came on after
15 minutes in. The Blasters got their first goal as their
forward received the ball about 30 yards out and headed
for the top of the box where he hit a smashing knuckleball
high and into the corner of the net, moving ever-so, past
the befuddled Dragons keeper.
The
Blaster side continued their attacking play putting several
shots on goal, and just wide, giving the Dragons plenty
to worry about. Then about 10 minutes after the initial
goal, the Blasters were awarded a corner kick and at the
crowd scene near the second post several Sandymen
were caught watching cartoons. The Blasters had their second
of the day and the Dragons keeper was left diving for nothing
but air.
Two
goals in 10 minutes was just about all the Sand Dragons
defense was willing to put up with as they increased their
level of play with plenty of time left in the half. Several
minutes past as both sides played hard and the Dragons tried
to regain possession time.
With
10 minutes left in the half the Sand Dragons keeper, Goge
Johl, made a classic instinctive one handed diving save
off a corner kick header aimed at the upper right corner
after the ball came in on a tremendous arrive. The save
marked the final and permanent sealing off of the goal for
the Blasters on the day.
The
second half saw the Sandymen playing more to their own style
as the side took control of possession and played with more
energy, heart and desire.
As the
half wore on it was clear that the Sand Dragons were near
to the point of scoring but could never put enough together
to put a goal up on the scoreboard. At this point the experienced
Blaster side were hunkering down for the remaining minutes,
wishing only to retain the 3 points on the day.
All
in all it could have been worse and better for the Sand
Dragons. The only solace coming from the fact that previously
4 goals were the fewest the Blasters had put past any team
in the league, including those in the top half of the standings.
The
MOM
committee had a hard time coming up with a Man
of the Match for Sunday and finally came to the conclusion
that no one had an outstanding day and that the best idea
was to blame Jonesey for everything, even if he wasn't watching
cartoons half the time. MOM
committee says, Jonesey gets the "Goat
of the Game".

Venom
0 vs. Mirage 2
The Venom mission was to play
Mirage tough, and try to secure a Venom victory. They
accomplished the first task as the match was a hard fought
battle with the outcome in doubt until late in the game.
Unfortunately
the Venom came up short in the quest for 3 points. The
1st half was reasonably an even played match under perfect
Soccer match conditions : blue sky, cool weather and clean
air.
In
particular standout was James aggressive play as Goalie,
and Rudy setting up our plays from the back side.
The
only score of the half came when a long Mirage pass hit
one of the wet dirt spots, and slided by our Goalie into
open space in front of the net, and Mirage capitalized.
The
2nd half also saw alot of competitive play, and also saw
alot of fine saves by James in goal, keeping the Venom
in the game.
The
2nd goal came on an auto-goal halfway into the half, so
it can be argued that other then two mishaps that became
Mirage goals, the Venom played Mirage rather evenly.
The
Man of the Match goes to James
Cagle for his fines saves, aggressive play, and utilizing
the full box in order to snatch balls.

Sand
Dragons 3 vs.
Saint Nicolas 2
It
was round 6 this past Sunday with the Sand
Dragons looking to take the 3 points from Saint Nicolas
as many were expecting.
Several
South Valley Sand Dragons fought the traffic and freeway
closure just to get to the match only a few minutes before
game time. (Losers) It most likely didn't help the team
to know that this was the first match with all
team members present.
Of
course the Saint Nicolas side was out for a win themselves
and had a large fan base watching the match and cheering
them on as just after the first 15 minutes of play, they
scored 2 goals within 7 minutes.
But
that was all that the Serbian squad would do as the rest
of the match was mostly Sand Dragons in possession except
for a few counter attack attempts that were turned back
at every chance.
The
first goal came in the last 10 minutes of the first half
as Mike "Jonesey" Jones came up from the defense
and scored a header off a great corner kick by Ralph DeGraph.
Then
with just a minute left in the first half a ball came
over, again from the touchline, and across the goal to
the back post. It looked like it was going to go past
everyone but in a moment of utter genius Geordie Wood
did the Newcastle shuffle and Scorpion kicked the back
post ball to rookie Mark Jensen who took the ball on the
volley and sent an incredible ball twisting and swerving
toward the goal. Just as everyone had thought the ball
went over the goal...it was in! The Sand Dragons sideline
erupted with joy as the score was tied with just seconds
left in the half.
The
second half saw the Sand Dragons playing well, dominating
possession while making many attacks look good, but as
the game carried on it was just a matter of time before
the Sandymen would put one of the attempts in.
With
just 5 minutes left in the match, the ball came up from
the back 4 to star midfielder, Roel Bazuin who cleanly
dished it to rookie Freddy Digne who laid it off to Andy
Honker, who had a great match himself. Big Andy took the
ball the final few feet to the endline and put it over
nicely to Steve Bruns, another Sand Dragon rookie, who
left no doubt and no chance for the Saint Nicolas side
as they watch the ripples in the back of the net!
4
minutes left and it was 3-2. With points nearly in hand
coach Nigel was overheard on the sidelines shouting, "OK
then lads...let's not fuck this up now!". But
at that point everyone was already thinking along similar
lines as the Sandymen constructed an impenetrable wall
and simply played possession for the remaining minutes.
A
great game was had by all, even after the miscues of the
first half. Extra respect given to three of our rookies,
Jonesey, MJ and Steve for scoring goals and playing well.
The post game MOM
committee had a hard time coming up with just one
player that exemplified the win and finally decided that
this was a team win as all deserved credit. So the Man
of the Match goes to the Sandymen...all of them!
Next
week...vs Blasters at 2 pm. Be there!
The
Sandymen
also want to give a cheer to Norbert
Peto of the Cobras SDFC for being the only Cobra to
show up at Jetz
Americana for the post match celebrations.

Cobras
3 vs. Eagles
3
What
a beautiful day for kicking the ball around, eh? This
match was to be the ONE! Cobras
were pitted against Eagles, a team that had a goal differential
of +3 on Cobras, and no goals. Well, the conditions were
great, but the subs were lacking. Cobras only had 2 subs
for the game. Did that get us down? Hells no! We were
ready to WIN! The attitude and enthusiasm was positive
and elevated. Let's run for 90 minutes boys!
YEEEEEEHAAAW!
The biggest part of the plan this game would to be to
control the midfield. In the first half, this was accomplished.
The defense was tough and Cobras controlled most of the
half. Passing was more accurate than past weeks, and the
"vibe" on the field was in sync. Cobras also had another
change in the game plan.....Rob H. as Keeper. Rob played
keeper due to a bum foot. He played well, but Eagles were
able to score twice.
The
first a jumbled ball that lost Rob's hands twice, and
a perfect cross in front of the goal that connected on
an Eagle players head. The defense had the man well marked
back and front; it was just a perfectly placed ball. Other
than that, Rob did a great job. His intensity paid off.
Darin C. played in the defense and was solid the entire
half. His containment, stealing, and passing were top
notch.
At
half time, I asked the guys if they wanted to loose to
these Eagles. #@!** NO! Let's get it in gear! Cobras were
so hyped up that it seemed like the start of a new game
with all refreshed players; there were no tired players
in sight.
The
second half was completely dominated by Cobras. The intensity
and urgency increased ten fold. About 30 minutes in, Cobras
got score number 1. Patricio M. on the breakaway! Yet,
there were still two more goals to go. I decided to give
Rob his shot for the goal by putting Darin C. in as Keeper
and sending Rob to the front lines. While consistently
pounding the Eagles, Cobras scored number 2 on a shot
from Walter Houtz with less than 5 minutes to play.
In
no less than half that remaining time, Rob got his goal.
A beautiful shot from the right side of the box to the
far left post! With Cobras ahead and 2 minutes to go,
it was defense time. All midfield was instructed to fall
back. The D held tight until on lone Eagle managed to
get the through ball down the right side of the field.
He made his way to the box and in an effort to dismantle
his efforts, Darin slid for the ball. Unfortunately for
Cobras, the ref did not see the play Cobras way and called
the foul, giving Eagles the penalty shot with less than
1 minute to go. Cobras Tied 3-3.
Everybody
played well and played hard, each player giving 110%.
I could ask for no more! With this much effort and three
separate goal scoring players, Cobras as a team gets Man
of the Match. Special mentions go to Walter and Bryan
for their superior hustle, even when the chips were down.
They helped keep the team on a high and encouraged each
player to stick with the game and keep the intensity consistent!
GREAT
GAME! THANKS GUYS!

Venom
0 vs. Incinerators 4
This Sunday morning started out like any other for Team
Venom only the weather finally broke. It was the perfect
weather for soccer... or anything. Many of the players
started arriving on time 30 minutes before the game to
warm up and stretch but unfortunately ten players didn't
show up.
With all the missing players and with Marty hurt and unable
to play the Venom team had only two substitutes. Many
of the key players were missing so the game plan had to
be adjusted at the last minute. The idea was to pack the
defensive end and keep the score low as the Incinerators
are a scoring machine.
The
first half went as expected. The Incinerators scored three
times. Greg scored on a little flick over his shoulder
and Rich got his two headers. Team Captain Chaz lead well
from the back using his size to hold off the opposition.
The substitutions were going well and at the end of the
half team Venom made some runs to the offensive end. No
real threatening shots but in the last 10 minutes the
Venom side spent 5 in the Incinerators end.
At
the half time meeting everyone was in a serious but calm
state. With limited options we decided to open it up a
little, try to have fun and not get hurt. Scott Wolfe
showed up during the half-time meeting and moved into
the middle defensive position. The strategy worked for
the most part and having Scott in the middle plugged it
up nicely.
Sand
Dragons EU team standout and Incinerator forward Rob Moore
scored the only goal of the second half from 10 yards
out on the far left of the penalty box. Keeper James Cagle
never had a chance.
The
game would end 4 - 0. It was a clean played and well officiated
game throughout. The only incident occurred at about the
70th minute when defenseman Steve Wake took an elbow to
the face when challenging on a high 50/50 ball. The blow
created a really bloody nose bleed. Using direct pressure
on his nose bridge and holding his head back, the bleeding
stopped in about 5 minutes.
Everyone
played fairly well but only Steve Wake bled for the cause.
For his solid play and dedication, Steve is the Team Venom
Man of the Match. He even
stayed till the end of the game to cheer on his team.
I'm sure he'll be out there again very soon. Well done
everyone.

Sand
Dragons 3 vs.
Dynamo 1
First
of all we need to correct last week's recap. It was Nigel
Forrest that scored a ripper of a goal that Steve Bruns
got credit for. Ooops. Sorry Nigel, good job and we need
to see more of that.
This
last Sunday found the Sand Dragons side feeling ready
to put it all together for their match vs Dynamo, a new
team in the Division.
The
opening moments of the match had the Sand Dragons with
most of the possession time and plenty of good hard play
with lots of balls to the feet.
The
Sand Dragons went earlydoors on Dynamo as the first goal
came in the first 5 minutes. Dragon's midfielder, Thong
Nguyen, set himself up with a corner kick from the right
side. Thong hit a hard line drive about 6 feet off the
ground and towards the crowd scene appearing at the front
stick and a lucky deflection sent Thong's ball into the
goal...One nil Sandymen!
The
new Dynamo side played hard and the Dragons were missing
shots left, right and center. Big Andy Honker went empty
as plenty of opportunities came and went.
It
was last season's leading scorer, Geordie Wood, that took
control of a few balls and finished a nice one to make
it 2 nil.
Later
in the half team Dynamo caught the Dragon's side flat
as a quick counter attack and deep pass found Johnny Ridgway
watching cartoons. As the Sand Dragons keeper came out
he showed how big his gut was but the Dynamo forward was
unimpressed as he danced around Goge to give Dynamo their
only goal of the day.
As
half-time approached it was Geordie again with the ball
in the box as a Dynamo Defender pushed him over and Geordie
went down like Buddy Holly. No hesitation from the ref.
as he pointed to the spot. Geordie picked up his pieces
and took a brilliant penalty to give himself his second
goal of the morning and make it 3-1 Sand Dragons.
The
second half saw the Dragons defense playing well as they
thwarted every attempt at goal by the surging Dynamo offensive.
Happy
with the 3 points, the Sand Dragons offensive threat reduced
themselves by showing everyone how many ways the side
could get close without really scoring.
The
post
game MOM committee picks Geordie Wood as the Sandymen
Man of the Match for his two
goals on the day.

Cobras
1 vs. Sonoran
6
Cobras
came out with great intent and played tough throughout
the match.
Unfortunately,
the outcome was not was they had envisioned. All that
saw action played hard and it paid off late in the second
half with a goal by Ian Ricci who was setup with a well
placed pass by Ivan Valdez after some extra effort by
Spencer Brown.
Next
week's match should provide the Cobras with one in the
win column if they can play as a single cohesive unit.
Ian
Ricci was the Man of the Match
for the well deserved goal!

Venom
1 vs. Dubliner Old Boys
6
On yet another beautiful 100 plus degree day, Team
Venom took player inventory and decided to play the
Dubliner Old Boys like anyone else, no better no worse.
The first half started out very solid, jamming the middle
and forcing everything outside. Both teams had their chances
and the half was drawing near as the Dubliner Old Boys
benefited from a questionable offside miss call.
With
the cumulative Venom heads hung low and 5 minutes remaining,
an all out assault came upon Team Venom. The only thing
that kept the good guys in the game were several skillful
saves by James Cagle, the Venom keeper.
After
a positive half-time conversation that emphasized aggressive
play, challenging all 50/50 balls and communication, the
Venom took the field with a renewed confidence. That confidence
was quickly extinguished as another breakaway put the
Venom side another goal down.
Despite
the back line showing cracks and the Venom keeper seemingly
getting a finger on almost everything, the attacking side
did not hesitate to take advantage of a napping opponent.
Last weeks MOM Marty, fired
a low near post rocket to score Team Venom's only goal,
making the score 3-1.
The last 20 min were mind boggling. Substitutions were
being made by the Venom trying to find some sort of chemistry,
meanwhile the Dubliner Old Boys again scored 2 goals in
quick succession as the Dubliner side were kept onside.
Team
Venom played a solid 70 minutes in a 90 minute game. A
game that was a battle and was played much closer than
the score revealed. All in all, another tough match under
our belts for a new team that is starting to gel.
This
weeks Man of the Match goes
to David Millar-Haskell. Dave played aggressively and
was relentless against their dribbling forwards. On several
occasions was able to break up the flow of a well passing
team. Congratulations Dave! Keep it up.
Other
honorable mentions go to Marty. Nice goal Marty! Our special
post game MOM goes to Romo. His AGGRESSIVE STYLE created
havoc for their goalie. All of this lead to their "psychological
games." And believe me, he was having none of that!

Sand
Dragons 5 vs.
Hardrockers 1
With
the Fall 2003 season well underway the Sand Dragons faced
the Hardrockers in the 3rd game of the season for the
Sandymen.
The
first half's play saw plenty of action as the Hardrockers
scored first after about 30 minutes of play. The goal
came against the run of play on a quick counter attack
catching the Sand Dragons defense flat.
The
majority of the half was dominated by offside calls against
the Sandymen leaving everyone fairly frustrated. Before
the end of the first half the Sand Dragons scored the
equalizer on a goal by Andy Honker.
After
adjustments to the game plan at half-time by coaches Kiko
and Nigel the Dragons were ready to take advantage of
the possession time they were enjoying during the course
of the first half.
The
final 4 goals were scored by Kiko Fierin, Steve Bruns,
Geordie Wood, and Freddy Digne.
Dieter
Welle had a solid match assisting on the third goal as
he made a run from the defense up the touchline crossing
the ball over for a header by Geordie.
With
5 different players scoring everyone had a pretty good
game and played 110% although there were no singular standouts.
Coach Kiko praised the defensive unit for a pretty solid
match. The post game MOM committee
voted Dieter Welle the Man of
the Match for solid play and for bringing enough beer
to last long enough to watch the rest of the matches of
the day.

Cobras
0 vs. Maccabi
4
With
a week of great weather, Sunday rolls around and BAMM,
nice 'n' hot! Just the way we like it. NOT!
Well, on to the show......Cobras
took the field ready to win. The passion, the attitudes,
the will.....it was all there. For the first 30 minutes
or so of the first half, Cobras held the game to 0 - 0.
The enemy was to score 2 times in last part of that half;
one was mighty close to offsides, yet Cobras were not
to get the benefit of the doubt.
The
other was a deflection off the top crossbar to the enemy
player who was able to put it in (even though Cobras were
called off sides for the exact same scenario the week
before). Oh well, can't win 'em all, right?
After
half-time, Cobras came out with an extra forward to press
the enemy. It would be to no avail. The enemy was again
able to put 2 in the net. Cobras pressed hard for about
15 minutes in this half and we had control on their field,
but failed to put on in the net.
Cobras
had several shots through both halves but would score
nothing. During the entire game, Cobras had trouble moving
the ball forward. Trapping was off and passing was poor.
Thanks to the players sticking to their guns and not losing
it, Cobras still managed to keep the enemy from scoring
freely.
The
Man of the Match goes to Anthony
Yoon who was able to maintain a consistent strong defensive
position. His speed and strength paid off. He stopped
every opposing player who tried to beat him and played
110% the whole game. Good Job Anthony!!! Keep it up!

Venom
1 vs. Payson 4
Team Venom
Another blazing Sunday afternoon as the "Good Guys" took
the pitch with mounds of confidence. Confidence that was
just short of putting a "W" in the win column on Sunday
afternoon.
The
Payson group came prepared with plenty of players and
some new offensive additions. Payson took an early lead
with two fast-break goals that left James, the Venom keeper,
vulnerable. Throughout the majority of the first half,
the ball seemed to travel equally between both teams.
A near miss by Vince that skimmed the left bar, would
have easily tipped the scales in the Venom direction going
into half-time. Denied!
Rocket Rob Heuer rolled an ankle two minutes before the
half. An injury that would prevent Rob from returning
to action. However, taking a seat early enabled him to
have a cold bear or six! The Venom squad had a positive
half-time conversation and an impact that lead to a an
early second half goal.
Marc
Chambers was on the finishing end of a beautiful cross
by Marty. Nice finish Marc! In all appearances the Venom
team were back in the game!
A
70 yard goal kick by Payson caught the defense flat footed
and resulted in another break away goal. Jason Schwein,
Payson's new star forward was very effective against the
Venom defense.
Payson
scored again and a tough game was over.
Team
Venom played their hearts out, but missing key players
from the lineup changed the dynamics of the side on this
Sunday.
The
Man of the Match award goes to Marty Weisbrodt
for
the assist on the lone Venom goal and solid play.
Special
thoughts go out to both Will Sisneros and Will Bullock,
having unforeseen injuries. Miss you both!

Sand
Dragons 2 vs.
Dubliners 1
The
Sand Dragons came out on a mission last Sunday. With
the season just started the Sandymen needed a win on the
results page to keep them in the hunt for silverware.
The
Dubliners, formerly Blarney Old Boys, had just finished
beating Mirage 9-1 last week and were ready for a good
match with the Sand Dragons.
The
match started strong with the Sand Dragons fielding nearly
a full squad with 2 players out sick on the sidelines.
With 10 minutes into the game, rookie Steve Bruns pushed
forward from his defensive position as the Dragons moved
the ball up field with crisp passing all around. As the
ball moved into the attacking third, Steve received the
ball and cleanly slotted it into the back of the net from
just within the penalty box.
The
rest of the half was played very tough by both teams.
With 10 minutes to go in the first half the Dragon's keeper
went full gun into the upright after a near post shot
came precariously close. Just as the ball got to the money
the Dragon's keeper hit the front stick and went down
like Buddy Holly.
After
the crowd scene cleared, play continued with the Sand
Dragons pushing, now very hard, as Rock n' Roel Bazuin
played the ball to Big Andy Honker. Big Andy's shot hit
the net like a watermelon seed shooting across the picnic
table on a hot summer afternoon and the Sandymen went
up by 2 goals with just 2 minutes left in the 1st half.
The
Dubliner side came out pressing hard. With 25 minutes
into the 2nd half as Kiko Fierin, the Dragon's sweeper,
flew across the box to meet an oncoming Dubliner forward
he couldn't help but snag the ball with his hand just
as the ref took in the blinder.
No
doubts from the ref as he pointed to the spot. Dubliner
Power forward, Mark Palmer, took up the challenge but
got his foot under the ball as Sandymen keeper, Goge Johl,
launched his mass in retribution. As the ball sailed over
the bar the referee signaled quickly to retake the kick
due to seven of the Dragon's players going early doors
into the box.
Palmer's
next attempt found nothing but net as Goge flew helplessly
across the goal.
It
was still Sandymen by one and it stayed that way for the
rest of the match even after a few close calls and fine
saves by Goge including a last minute save coming off
a point blank Mark Palmer shot.
Everyone
gave 110% and played pretty good. Sand Dragon's midfielder,
Thong Nguyen, played defensively very well in midfield
and still managed to effectively participate in the Dragon's
offense. Mike "Jonesey" Jones deserved mention
as did Kiko Fierin, both for their timely and tough defensive
play.
The
post
game MOM committee voted Goge "Sour
Meat" Johl as the Sandymen's Man
of the Match for solid play, keeping the Dubliner's
from scoring anything but the twice kicked penalty.

Venom
x vs. Had a bye x
Sunday
September 28th, 2003
Sand Dragons
and Cobras had bye's this week.
But the played a freindly, won by the Sandymen 7-1
Venom
5 vs. Hardrockers
2
After a close first game against Saint Nicolas the Venom
Boys were looking to clean up their act and put a mark
in the win column.
A second objective was to get even with the Hardrockers
for pulling out of the Payson Tournament in July before
the Dragon Tournament Team could pound them for a max
points victory. The loss of points kept the Sand Dragon
Tournament Team from getting into the final against Payson…
a team already beaten 5 to 3 in the first game. Both teams
started by feeling out the other to find a weakness. Ten
minutes into the game Keeper James Cagle found that that
weakness. He let loose a monster punt deep into the Hardrocker
end, well into the 18 yard box.
The ball only bounced twice for Rocket Robert Hurer and
at the perfect moment, when the keeper was committed and
coming out to close on the shooter, Rob placed the perfect
lob over his head into the back of the net. A crafty goal
made possible by the HUGE foot of our keeper. The Hardrockers
recovered and seized the initiative, moving into a somewhat
disorganized VENOM defensive end. Not once but twice before
the half they closed escrow, taking the lead. Keeper James
had no chance on either shot and heee wasss pissed. TEAM
VENOM left the field down by a goal, down 1 to 2.
After some good halftime talk, TEAM VENOM retook the
field, still a goal down but ready for the challenge.
Rocket Rob Hurer was under strict instructions from VENOM
Coach Will Bullock… be selfish with the ball and get it
into the net… and he did… two more times. Once knocking
a small ice chest behind the goal into the air and the
second time making their defense look inadequate. One
defender was so angered that his actions begged for a
red card.
He was rewarded and the Hardrockers played a man down
for the remainder of the match. The Rocket had his hat
trick and TEAM VENOM was in the lead for good. With the
lead and with a man advantage, TEAM VENOM controlled the
tempo. The insurance goal came when Rudy Torres lasered
one in from 25 yards out proving to all that last weeks
MOM was not a fluke. There were several more shots on
their keeper by several players… but no goal.
Then with 10 minutes remaining, Romulo “The Rookie” Roma
carried the ball just into the 18-yard box and punched
in the fifth and final goal. Several players offered a
steady performance and others filled positions they normally
wouldn’t play. Vince Nagy moved to midfield and really
found a home. Scotty Wolfe moved back to center defender
and really plugged it up. But for his hat trick, TEAM
VENOM Man of the Match for Game 2 goes to Rocket Rob.
And by the way, with his performance, the Rocket leads
all scorers within SDFC. Nicely done, Rob.

Sand
Dragons 0 vs.
Mirage 4
It
was opening day and the weather was great! As the Sand
Dragons start off the season...they're feeling good
to get the first game of the season behind them.
The
SDFC Side hoped to get early doors on Mirage but in a
game that saw the Sand Dragons with the majority of the
play, Mirage put 4 past the side in an otherwise lackluster
performance by the team.
The
Sand Dragons played Mirage in a pre-season friendly which
ended with a 2 nil win by the Sandymen the weekend prior.
This
weeks game was scoreless until the turning point when
the amusement arcade came on after 30 minutes or so. The
Dragons defense was caught watching cartoons after a tremendous
arrive from the Mirage forwards. Mirage's goals came from
well timed counter attacks which caught the Sand Dragons
napping as through balls and good runs turned into goals
in the front of the Sand Dragons goalmouth.
With
2 goals in the first half and 1 more in the 2nd Mirage
hit a shot that went off Johnny Ridgway's shin and sneaked
past the cartoon watching dragons keeper for the fourth
goal.
The
Man of the Match award was
going to be awarded to Jensen and Jonesey for bringing
the beer, but the MOM committee
had to revoke when we prematurely ran out. So no man of
the match this week, we've already forgotten it.

Cobras
0 vs. Pumas
International 4
What
a day, folks, nothing better than a nice brisk 90 minute
run at 2:00 PM in the Valley of the Sun. Due to poor management
by some sap who said things were under control, the Cobras
were forced to take the field with a mere 12 guys.
Two were out because of the infamous scheduling quandary,
one had some shindig up in Canada (gee, who dat?), and
another broke himself so bad during the summer season,
it is unlikely he will be able to return for Fall, so...........
The
Cobras were to face their arch nemesis Pumas International.
It would be a hard fought battle. The first 30 seconds
were excellent as Cobras controlled the field, but a slight
mishap gave Pumas the first score at 1:48 into the game.
Dang, it sure was hot out! Anyway, with the heart and
desire to turn things around, Cobras persisted. Although
the Cobras had multiple shots on goal, none would find
the back of the opponents net. By half time, it was Cobras
0, Pumas 2.
After
a regrouping and some discussion about the weather (was
it hot or just us?), Cobras took the field the second
half with a vengeful fury. After 20 minutes of complete
domination, the Pumas defender again places the perfect
ball to his wing and the one on one breakaway results
in another Pumas score.
The
last 20 minutes or so would be constant long balls from
the Puma defense to the right wing, who continued to cause
Cobras defense to run harder and faster (just like the
6 million dollar man). Therefore, Man
of the Match goes to Dennis and Laz for being that
guys jogging partner. Where'd you get that extra steam
from, guys? Walter and Jimmy get extra Kudos for the suds
service! Thanks guys!

Venom
2 vs. Saint Nicolas 3
TEAM
VENOM
started their season against a new team in the Old Boys
Division. Not much was known about Saint Nicolas but they
arrived at the field 30 minutes early and with a large
roster… all wearing bright red suits. However I can assure
you there was not a Santa on the team. Most of the players
are originally from Eastern European countries. They would
show us quickly that they had the skills... But could
they hold out against TEAM VENOM?
The
first 15 to 20 minutes of the game TEAM VENOM was totally
flat with no coordination of effort. Several new players
and position changes really effected performance. Vince
Naggy was new to the front line, Chaz Kasinicky and Marty
Weisbrodt were new in the midfield and the defense added
Michael Stevens and Steve Wake.
Old
Saint Nic took advantage of our position and scored on
three breakaways. One where the player received the ball
in the midfield and ran all the way down to the goalmouth
and, Score! Their sideline had at least 30 people and
they went wild every time the Jolly Men got off a shot.
But TEAM VENOM rallied. Yigael Cohen volunteered his expertise
to run the sideline and substitution… and he did it marvelously.
He made timely changes in the midfield and in defense
and the onslaught was halted.
Although
down by three goals, there was a twinkle of positive light
shining on the lads. At the half there were positive comments
and a formation change. And when the time came they took
the field with visions of sugar plums dancing in their…
Sorry, wrong story. TEAM VENOM took the field with the
starting eleven and immediately took control. Several
attacks were stopped dead by defensive captain Rudy Torres
and his Great Wall of Defenders.
Then,
20 minutes into the second half, Will Bullock pushed a
ball from the right side to the middle of the field, right
to Rob Heuer. Rob trapped the ball and turned to goal.
All the Jolly Men could do was watch as Rob raced down
the field and had his way with the keeper. Saint Nic was
officially on his heels. A few minutes later, Marty Weisbrodt
let fly a rocket from the left corner. The Santa keeper
tried to deflect the ball out but it was too close to
the post and he deflected it into the goal. The crowd
went wild… not the Saint Nicolas crowd, mind you.
Ninety
percent of the second half was played in the Saint Nicolas
back yard. The Jolly Men were now just Santa’s Helpers…
Elvin men gasping for air and complaining about the heat.
Obviously our conditioning had paid off. We ran them into
the ground. There were several more attempts on goal but
to no avail. The game ended 3 – 2 Jolly Men.
Had
this been the second or third game, I’m certain the result
would have been different, with the Jolly Men going home
sporting a pair of fang marks on their arse. TEAM VENOM
notables for the game were Rob Heuer and Marty Weisbrodt,
each with a goal. Will Bullock and Chaz Kasinicky offering
up good passing and through balls. And Albert Mercado,
back after a year in rehab from a broken ankle, turned
in a fine performance back in the defense.
However,
the Man of the Match has to
go to Defensive Captain Rudy Torres for coordinating his
men, building a defensive wall, effectively pushing the
ball forward and halting the red scourge. Well done, Rudy!
After consuming Chaz’s case of cool ones, TEAM VENOM proceeded
to the new lair, Jetz
for suds and sustenance. AND WHAT A LAIR! Our sincere
thanks to Linda for taking such good care of us. We can
hardly wait to see her again. ;-)

3 vs. Scottsdale United
1
With
the clouds looming overhead, threatening a possible rainout,
Raptors vs. Scottsdale United started on schedule and
the only rain that happened during the game was all on
Scottsdale United.
The
first half was only the beginning of a game that was set
in the stars for Raptors SDFC. Raptors did a good job
of moving the ball around but had some trouble expanding
the field. Raptors held a very tight off sides line and
found that our speed and reaction time was a bit off several
times.
Darin's
game started early as he took on at least two one on one
scenarios. We believe that Darin may have mob ties as
he managed to put the 'Fear' in Scottsdale United, causing
them to miss the net on several attempts. Darin ran, jumped,
swooped, and scrambled to leave Scottsdale United scoreless,
and that was just the first half.
Walter
managed to get a one on one against their keeper, but
Walter knows how to aim for net! Half time was 1 - 0 Raptors.
The second half continued a hard fought and physical game,
yet with AJ and Patricio scoring some serious rocket shots,
Scottsdale United could do nothing to stop us. They still
managed to repeatedly miss the goal and it took them two
on one to finally get a point on the board. Final, 3-1
Raptors.
Man
of the Match goes to Darin, who with his infamous mad
dogging of other teams strikers, hustled his butt off
and made some great saves in the face of certain death,
not once, but several times! Raptors SDFC, UNDEFEATED!

Vipers
1 vs. Touch
of Grey 4
The
Vipers opened the season against A Touch of Grey, a new
team to the division but players not new to SUASL. Almost
all of their players came from open division teams. They
were speedy and skillful. The Vipers were also short a
few players, offensive phonemic Rudy Torres for one.
The
first half opened with a Viper 2 man advantage and the
Grey top keeper didn't’t arrive till much later in the
game. Initially the Vipers played well taking the ball
deep several times. But over the first 20 minutes their
players arrived and took the field and our trips to the
offensive end declined.
Their
first goal came off a free kick out side the box that
hit the hands of keeper James Cagle but still managed
to sneak in. The second when there was a lapse in defensive
coverage and touch of grey took advantage by putting a
rocket of a shot into the upper corner past the helpless
Cagle. The half ended 2-0, Grey. Good halftime adjustments
moved new Viper star Rob Heuer back to play an offensive
midfielder. His skills provided for more control of the
middle and offered more offensive pushes.
The
Grey struck first and eventually made it 4-0 Grey. But
midway through the half, Heuer pushed the ball to space
where Will Bullock collected the ball and raced to the
left side of the goal, 10 yards out and let fly a low
mean shot that bounced off the Grey keeper. Will Sisneros
was in good position and took a shot 8 yards out that
was also deflected but it slowly rolled 3 yards out of
the net where Mark Jensen, Vipers leading scorer last
season, finished the play earning the Vipers only goal.
Man
of the Match goes to both Rob Heuer for his second
half efforts, making plays happen up the field and to
Mark Jensen for netting the first goal of the season and
preventing the shutout. With several new players it will
take some time for the Vipers to know each other. When
they do I’m sure they will get points on the board.
Please
NOTE:
Next
week is a bye to allow for participation in the Grand
Canyon State Games where the Sand Dragon Football Club
is the defending Bronze medal winner. Luck to the GCSG
Team and see you all in two weeks on Sunday the 29th at
7pm against Mirage.

Raptors
5 vs. Babylon 1
With
players missing and paperwork still needing to be put
in order, Raptors SDFC took the field with ten men strong
against Babylon who were only seven.
The
first half started a bit shakey as Raptors, a new team
with new faces, tried to gel as a functional team. Some
players were filling positions they were not typically
familiar with and thus some confusion occurred but each
player did his part to work cohesively within the team.
Unfortunately
Raptors could not get that cohesion to an acceptable level
in the first half and with players tired from having no
subs and a somewhat uncontrolled level of play, Babylon
put one in our net in a one on one situation with our
Keeper as the defense was completely beaten.
Raptors would not fold, however, as a newly rejuvenated
team took the field after half time with eleven men against
eight. Within the first five minutes, Walter Houtz turned
the game around with a beautiful follow up and finish
ripper into the opponents net.
After
that, with our refreshed attitudes and a new found confidence
and enthusiasm, Raptors took control of the game and systematically
scored four more goals with hardly any offensive play
from Babylon.
As
every man did his part with no subs in sight and several
second winds, Raptors as a whole were the Man
of the Match. A few players deserve mention for 110%
effort including: Walter Houtz whose consistent hussle
is unmatched, Jimmy Mackey who even though he wants to
score and score, took one for the team and played defensive
Man Marker against a formidable foe and shut him down
all the second half, and lastly, Julio 'Mark' Guzman for
his precise and patient control of midfield distribution.
Don't mess with Raptors!

Sand
Dragons 1 vs. Samba
1
|
It
was a night game for the Final match of the Season for the
Sand Dragons side. Playing with only 11 men on the night,
the Dragons had a fine match indeed.
Samba,
on their way to the playoffs, were in decent form as the
Dragons dominated the first 20 minutes of the match. Both
sides had opportunities in the first half to score but it
was Samba who scored off a corner kick and header at the
back post.
The
second half saw mostly even play with the Dragons possessing
the ball about 60/40 in the half. Samba put on a good show
as they pelted the goal with shots only to be stopped by
the Dragons keeper on every attempt.
It
was in the 80th minute that the Dragons scored the equalizer.
Andy Honker gets credit for the goal although he "scared"
it into the net. Samba's keeper took a look at Andy barreling
down at him and missed the back pass from the defender and
the ball trickled past.
With
10 minutes left it seemed certain that the Dragons, with
all the momentum now, would score. Fate chose otherwise
and the match ended 1-1.
The
post match MOM forum, who stayed (9 players) at the field
until after midnight, selects Goge Johl as the Man
of the Match for plenty of fine saves on the evening.

Vipers
0 vs. Incinerators 10
The
Vipers were entering the Season's last game against the
Incinerators, who were the League's #1 defensive team,
and #2 team overall in the standings.
Also
the game was going to be played midweek, as it had been
previously postponed due to rain.
And
unfortunately for the Vipers, 6 starters would be out
due to midweek travel schedules. Although the gameplan
was the pack the defensive back, the Vipers basically
went mano-a-mano with the opponent, but just did not have
the ammo to offset an onslaught.
Final
10-0. Every player gave their all, and at this juncture
- that is all we can ask. MOM
: New addition Robert Heuer, who played well, and kept
a good attitude, despite the onslaught.

Club History was made this last
Sunday as
all 4 teams in the Club won their perspective matches
Sand
Dragons 3 vs. Mirage
0
|
As
the last club match of the day commenced the pressure was
on to win, not just to complete the day with wins all around
the club but to also to get back to the Sand Dragons winning
ways.
The
opening minutes of play saw Mirage start short a couple
of players. The Dragons took advantage of the numbers and
pressed heavily for the first 20 minutes of the match. The
first goal came about 5 minutes in as Dragons forward, Thong
Nguyen, received the ball deep inside Mirage's penalty box.
He laid the ball back to the top of the box as Timmy Hume
came forward and slotted the ball into the side netting
from just outside the 18 to make it 1 nil.
The
second goal came from the Belgian / Aussie combo of Kiko
and Roel. Kiko sent a free kick into the box which just
barely missed the head of Nigel Forrest who was streaking
across the penalty box with fury. As the ball went untouched,
it bounced once as the Mirage players were frozen in anticipation.
Roel Bazuin, who was making his run to the far post, saw
his opportunity as he coolly headed the ball past the keeper
for his 1st goal of the season as he made it 2 nil Dragons.
As
the 1st half progressed Mirage made up the numbers they
were missing as players arrived late. The Dragons kept the
pressure on as Mirage also had a few close attempts. One
was saved by the Dragons keeper from about 5 yards out as
he sprawled his hulk in front of the Mirage forward blocking
the shot with his chest.
Late
in the first half Dragons leading scorer Geordie Wood, who
had a flurry of shots throughout the half, got his 7th goal
of the season and the 3rd and final goal of the day for
the Sandy Men. It was a true team goal as the ball came
from the defense, up the wing to the end line. With the
ball in the air, Nigel was the first to get his head to
the furiously spinning ball but could only direct the ball
to team mate Roel Bazuin who was now convinced he was in
for another goal for the day. Roel went up to head the spinning
deflection but couldn't get the enough behind it to put
it past the keeper. Instead he deftly headed the ball to
Geordie Wood who was laying in wait at the far post. By
now the ball was on a silver platter as Newcastle's number
one fan nailed the ball into the back of the net.
The
second half saw plenty of action as both teams pressed each
others defense. Dragons stopper, Milton Melo took yet another
shot to the nose, the third since he broke it last week
in an earlier match, and was replaced by the Dragons back
up keeper, Tod Ross. Kudos to Tod who came in and made an
impact as he played 110%. Thong Nguyen, with a painful injury,
played the entire second half due to a lack of subs on the
bench.
The
match wasn't over yet as Mirage pressed to score at least
one goal in an otherwise disappointing match. Dragons keeper,
Goge Johl, kept the sheet clean with a few saves including
one at the final minute of the match which he dug out of
the upper corner and turned over the bar.
A
great team effort led to smiling faces after the match.
Man of the Match goes to Scotty
Harelson who overcame Tom Uczekaj's inability to get the
cooler to the match even though he himself couldn't make
it. Scott heroically made the beer run solo and satisfied
his teammates thirst for victory.

Vipers
8 vs. HardRockers 0
If
ever the Vipers back were against the wall, now was it.
In potentially the last game of the year, the Vipers now
saw themselves in the cellar, and only a win or a draw
against the improved HardRockers would get them out of
that position.
Maybe
the stars and planets were aligned just right on this
Sunday for the Vipers were about to unleash the seasons
frustrations on the undermanned HardRockers. Well maybe
it was not the stars and planets, but instead the Vipers
self-pride and their refusal to quit.
During
the week, Albert Mercado and Mark Jensen came up with
the strategy of an all-out offensive assault, no holding
back. After all, the Vipers did not have much to lose,
but everything to gain. They were also going to put Goalie
James Cagle on the front line, in order to utilize his
offensive skills. 17 players showed up, making it the
most powerful lineup the team had seen in a long time.
After an emotional plea from the coach Albert Mercado
that it was now or never, and a special guest appearance
by volunteer assistant coach, Robert Heuer, the team was
ready to play, and play it did.
After
some early missed offensive opportunities, the floodgates
opened, and opportunities were capitalized at every turn.
David Millar-Haskell, Mark Wzsolmierski, Rudy Torres and
Glennon Miller all scored on an assortment of headers,
long range and short range shots. The defensive back line
trio of Steve Bruns, Glennon Miller and Mike Jones, and
the goalkeeping of Lance Leslie told their teammates not
to worry, they had the Viper defensive front secured.
With
newfound confidence, the Vipers continued the onslaught,
with James Cagle, Mike Jones, Will Sisneros and Will Bullock
all tallying on another assortments of shots into the
back of the net.
It
was simply a "TTE" - Total Team Effort. Everyone played
well, everyone played hard. If Man of the Match could
be given to the whole team...it would. But in this case,
it goes to James Cagle. Not only in his first start on
the offensive line did he score on a sensational long
run shot, and beautifully assisted on 2 crucial first-half
goals, but he also guaranteed scoring a goal to Mark and
Albert, in writing, and delivered. And finally, he gave
the front line a calming influence that was sorely lacking
during the season, and for all these reasons, he is awarded
Man of the Match.

Venom
3 vs. Tempe Devils
1
|
History
usually shows that the most dangerous team on the pitch
is the one coming off of a loss. The Reds were anxious to
prove history correct, and wipe out the taste of their only
regular season loss in 2 campaigns.
The
Reds started slowly, adjusting to the loss of 4 players
that normally inhabit our starting lineup. The slow start
staked the Tempe Devils to an early 1-0 lead, as an errant
ball rebounded through our back line and found the netting
after bouncing over a stunned Courtney Strange.
The
Reds rebounded quickly and cleaned up our passes, continually
reloading for dangerous opportunities on the Devil's goal.
Alex struck the equalizer and let the Devils know that there
would be no upset on the pitch this Sunday.
The
2nd half was dominated by the Reds, as we dropped the "Hammer"
on the Devils and took control of the match. Tim got in
on the scoring action taking control of a loose ball inside
the 18 and "Hammering" home a shot past the Devils keeper.
The
Devils started playing physical in an attempt to get back
into the match and unfortunately drew a red card as their
play was rewarded by the Ref. With only 10 men on the pitch,
their fate was sealed as the Reds stormed their goal. Tim
was taken down in the box and the PK was hit wide for a
brief spell of relief for the Devils, but, their physical
play was again their undoing as another PK was awarded to
the Red's. James LaBar left little doubt in slotting this
one past their helpless keeper.
The
score remained 3-1 as the Reds played a little 2 touch and
controlled the remaining time in the half. Man
of the match honors go to Neil Ellefsen and Bryan Sabato
for their solid play in dominating their areas of the field.
Bryan could have had the solo award had he deposited a beautiful
pass from "Neil Ellefsen", into the net. For Neil, it was
a welcome effort as his form from last year reappeared and
he scrapped for every ball around the Devil goal area...8-1-1
and now the final run for the championship...

Sand
Dragons 2 vs. HardRockers
3
|
Another
warm sunny Sunday found the Sand Dragons frustrated as they
gave up 3 points in an upset match.
The
HardRockers started the match with 10 men and although the
Dragons dominated most of the play in the first half, the
Dragons only managed to put in one goal on what seemed like
over 20 attempts.
Dragons'
Thong Nguyen put in the sole goal of the first half as the
HardRockers capitalized on intercepted passes within the
Dragon's defensive half. The score at half time was 3-1
HardRockers.
Completely
frustrated in the first half, the Dragons fell to petty
bickering and pointing fingers. One of the biggest frustrations
revolved around the number of off-sides called, which was
estimated at about 20-25 times in the first half alone.
The
second half saw the Dragons completely dominate the HardRockers
but still could only put in a single goal. Numerous off-sides
calls continued. Thanks to Andy Honker the Dragons made
it 3-2 but with only 10 minutes left, the Sandy Men couldn't
find the net again even through some spectacularly close
moments.
In
a match that had most off their game, Scotty Harelson had
a solid match at defensive back and gets the Man
of the Match nod for a solidly played game.

Vipers
1 vs. Blarney Old Boys 4
The
Vipers took on the third place Blarney Old Boys Sunday,
with a plan to play a strong defensive match. The Vipers
lined up in a 4-5-1 formation and for most of the match
the strategy worked to perfection.
Five
minutes into the game the Vipers stunned Blarney with
goal by Mark Jensen. The goal was set up with precision
passing from Scott Wolfe and Rudy Torres.
Unfortunately
the lead was short lived as ten minutes later Blarney
scored off of a corner kick. The Vipers keeper, instead
of catching the corner, inexplicably batted it into his
own goal. For the rest of the half the Vipers settled
into a defensive stance which worked well.
Blarney,
however would score on two more corner kicks to make the
score 3-1 at the half. The second goal came off of a header
from about ten yards out that floated into the goal untouched.
Coach
Albert Mercado made a switch at keeper at the half, allowing
Lance Leslie to make his Viper's debut at keeper. Lance
played well giving up two second half goals, one coming
off of a rebounded save. The defense continued its solid
effort, led by John Ridgeway and Glennon Miller. Glennon
captained the defense at sweeper and did a fine job positioning
his players.
For
his effort Glennon is man of the
match. The Viper's offense could not get untracked
in the second half, however Rudy and Will Sisneros had
a couple of good runs. The final score was Blarney 5 Vipers
1.

Cobras
3 vs. United SC 1
Cobras
had 16 points out of 7 games and were in third going into
the game against one of the two group leaders who had
20 out of 8.
After
a slow start by both teams, Cobras took a 1-0 lead on
a cross from Igor that found the back of the net, Igor's
first of the year.
The
rest of the first half was controlled by our defense,
which lost Milton to a broken nose on an elbow to the
face, as well as Alex due to a strained calf.
The
second half started with a few good chances on the cobras'
side, who were finally rewarded with a second goal by
Spencer on a great through pass by Ivan.
A
third goal came on some outstanding work from Ian who
laid it off for Damian, who made it 3-0 in his first game
with the team. Cobras gave up a late goal on a questionable
call in the box that led to a penalty. The shot was initially
stopped by Darrin, but was put away after our defense
was slow to react to the rebound. 3-1 was the final in
a great win for the team, and an all-round good effort.
Several
players deserve a special mention; Ivan, Spencer, and
Milton all had great efforts, but MOM
honors are shared by Jimmy and Ian who both worked tirelessly
on a hot afternoon. Jason Benge even managed to keep his
streak alive!!

0 vs. Titans FC
2
|
A
new rivalry was formed on the pitch this Sunday, as the
top 2 teams in 1st division met for the first time. The
game was physical from the opening whistle, with both teams
going at each other and challenging each other for every
loose ball.
The
Reds controlled much of the half, but were unable to find
the back of the net. The Titans managed only 2 chances on
our goal, once on a corner and then on a long throw in.
Unfortunately for the Reds, both of those chances resulted
in deflected loose balls in our box, and were put in the
back of the net by their forwards. The Reds trailed at the
half by 2 goals, but came out hungry in the 2nd half.
The
Reds were all over the Titans, and completely dominated
the 2nd half, creating dangerous chances in bunches. Frustration
and 2 key injuries finally slowed us down, and the 2-0 score
remained unchanged.
The
Reds may have lost Jens Amlie to a season ending knee injury,
and also watched Jimmy Deutsch go down on a spikes-up challenge
by the Titan keeper.
We
faced our 1st regular season loss in 2 seasons, but showed
class in fighting until the final whistle, and controlling
most of the match. This one has the looks of a special rivalry,
and both teams agreed afterward, that we are destined to
meet again.
Player
of the match honors go to Lano, who controlled possession
in the midfield and created many unrewarded chances for
our strikers.

Sand
Dragons 1 vs. Blasters
4
|
The
Sand Dragons match with the league leaders didn't turn out
the way the Dragons were hoping for as the Blasters put
4 goals against the side on Sunday.
It
was a hard fought match with lots of action in the midfield
as the Dragons seemed to win the battles in the center of
the field. It was the flanks, however, that the Blasters
side exploited beating the Dragons midfield and defense
with well timed through balls. The Blasters scored all 4
of thier goals on one-on-one's with two of the shots finding
the corner net just inside the posts.
The
second of the day was from a ball they snatched from a bad
defensive pass. The Dragon's keeper saved the initial one-on-one
but the Blasters' forward was able to collect the resulting
rebound and put the ball into an empty net.
At
the start of the second half it was 2 nil with the Dragons
putting on the heat as Tom Uczekaj recived a ball from a
free kick taken by Andy Honker. Andy, who was in great position
to take his own shot, instead lobbed the ball across the
field to Tom who was about 30 yards out and at the right
corner of the penalty box. Tom collected the ball and put
a well hit volley into the upper corner from about 23 yards
out as everyone on the field watched the shot hit the upper
netting.
It
was 2-1 until the last 15 minutes when the Blasters broke
thorough the Dragons defense twice. It was too much for
the Dragons to come back from as the match ended without
another goal from the Dragons side.
In
a game that otherwise had no one that played well, the post
match MOM committee awards the Man
of the Match award to Tom Uczecaj for his sole goal
of the day.

Cobras
1 vs. World Futbol 0
The
Cobras continued their winning ways this Sunday with another
strong team effort, beating World Futbol 1-0.
The
score should have been better as the squad dominated the
majority of play and created a number of threatening chances.
Early
offensive pressure was rewarded about 20 minutes in when
Jimmy Mackey got his head onto a Spencer Brown corner
kick and scored what would be the lone goal of the match.
Solid
defensive play along with a consistent offensive threat
kept the World side from really threatening the Cobra
goal the entire match. Once again, everyone on the team
contributed in some way to the victory.
Nick
Tobianski and Jason Benge split time in net and kept another
clean sheet for the second straight week.
For
scoring the lone goal, his second header in two games,
man of the match goes to Jimmy
Mackey.

Venom
1 vs. Predators
0
|
The
rubber-match was finally at hand; Venom vs Predators, a
rematch of last season's championship match. Both teams
were after each other from the opening whistle, with hard
tackles and 50/50 challenges that usually resulted in a
player being scraped off of the pitch. Andrew had a little"somthin-somethin"
up his sleeve, and threw a new look at the Predators, who
had made it common practice to watch most of our games this
season.
Throwing
caution out the window, Andrew and Scott started the game
with 3 strikers up top and a strategy of playing the long
ball down the center of the field. The Reds usually play
a possession game and attack from the flanks, and the new
formation and game plan worked perfectly, as Jason Green
struck at the 10 minute mark with a 1v1 against the oppositions
keeper. Jason calmly faked near post and hit the side netting
far post as the Predators keeper was left sitting on his
arse.
At
the 15 minute mark, the Reds dropped into a different formation
and continued to create dangerous opportunities while Jeff
Johnson and James LaBar dominated the Predator forwards
and kept Courtney from any real danger. As is usually the
case when we play the Predators, the game was very physical
and both teams shared a couple of yellow cards going into
the half. The second half saw much of the same with every
ball hotly contested and the Red's getting the better of
the opposition with frequent attempts on goal.
The
Predators stood their ground and managed to avoid 2 separate
PK's as Jason Green was taken down twice in the box. Each
time the Ref gave the free-kick from outside the 18. With
less than 5 minutes in the game, an indirect free kick was
awarded to the Predators which resulted in the ball being
placed at the edge of the 6yd box. Courtney charged through
the center of the wall and punched the kick out to the 18
where Brett Epstein calmly cleared it down field.
The
Predators were beaten and were unable to mount any offense
after their only legit attempt on Goal was denied. Another
clean sheet for Courtney in Goal, who has blanked the opposition
5 times this season.
Man
of the Match honors are shared between Jeff Johnson
and Jason Green. Both players dominated their area's of
the field and made the game easy for their teammates to
control the match...

Sand
Dragons 1 vs. Blarney Old Boys
2
|
The
match started off with the Dragons looking good, mostly
dominating the first 30 minutes. As the rest of the match
continued it saw Blarney come into it's own as they attacked
relentlessly for the next 15 minutes.
In
the 40th minute the Dragons' keeper, Goge Johl came out
on a one-on-one with a Blarney forward and just as the forward
was trying to get by, Goge saved the ball and got nailed
in the ear by the forwards knee as his reward.
With
about 4 minutes left in the half Blarney scored on a free
kick which floated into the box and a flick header found
the upper corner as the Blarney went up by one.
As
the opening minutes of the second half started, Blarney
took advantage of a poor defensive pass and recovered the
ball. A pass from a Blarney forward across the Dragons'
box found another Blarney forward, their best player, who
pushed the ball past a diving Dragons' keeper to make it
2 nil, Blarney. Kiko Fierin received a calf injury soon
after, taking him out for the rest of the match.
The
Dragons had a poor second half, playing poor passes throughout
the field. With about 15 minutes left in the half. Paul
Grimaldi took the ball away from a Blarney player and dribbled
past a few players and hit a rocket of a shot from about
30 yards out for a Sand Dragons score.
It
was to be the only Sand Dragons goal of the day as the remainder
of the game was played with renewed vigor but still plagued
by poor passing and bad decisions. Timmy Hume was put out
for 5 minutes from an elbow to the eye. He'll need a few
stitches for that one.
The
post match MOM forum nominated Goge Johl as the Sand Dragons'
man of the match for his numerous
one-on-one saves as well as other saves on the line. The
Dragons' keeper kept the score down in an otherwise lackluster
showing.

Vipers
3 vs. Vikings reUnited 7
The
Vipers started the week with an emphasis on improving
the offense, and capitalizing on its offensive opportunities.
It did the former by scoring 3 goals after having only
scored 5 all season.
The
first gave the Vipers a 1-0 lead early in the game when
Will Sisnerso had a shot on goal blocked by the goalie,
but Scott Wolfe was there to slam it home.
After
the Vikings scored to tie the game at 1-1, an excellent
game was being played until the Viper defense broke down
and allowed 2 goals in the final 5 - 7 minutes including
one with 15 seconds left to fall behind at half-time 3-1.
The
2nd half saw the opponent have the upper hand in the offensive
slugfest by outscoring the Vipers 4-2. The 2nd goal was
scored by defender Mike Jones, who came up from the sweeper
position to put one away. For this, and for his superior
defensive skills displayed, he was named Man
of the Match.
The
3rd goal was scored by Steve Biddle, who has made the
most of his playing time by having a high ratio of shots
on goal. Defender John Ridgway placed a perfect pass in
the air to the goalmouth, and Steve finished it home.
Alas, the 2nd part of the equation was not completed,
as the Vipers did not capitalize on some other golden
opportunities, including an open net. Had that made a
difference or not in the final outcome, we cannot say,
but the Vipers will continue playing hard.

Cobras
2 vs. X-Men 0
The
Cobra squad continued their winning ways on Sunday with
a solid team victory.
After
starting a bit tentatively in the first half, the Cobras
began to knock the ball around well with some one and
two touch passing.
About
thirty minutes into the game, Alex Roberts received a
ball on the right touchline and played a first time pass
to Andy Honker at the top of the box. Andy settled the
ball and then hit a shot off the outside of his right
foot. The spin on the shot caught the X-Men keeper moving
the wrong way and even though he got a hand to the ball
it went into the back of the net.
Unlike
a few games earlier in the season, the Cobras played even
stronger in the second half, creating numerous chances
on goal.
The
squad was rewarded for the pressure midway through the
half when an Alex Roberts cross found the head of a streaking
Jimmy Mackey at the far post for the second goal.
A
solid defensive effort kept the X-Men from too many dangerous
chances and the match ended 2-0. This was a real team
effort, with everyone contributing and puts the Cobras
in good league position, sitting in 4th place, but with
a game or two in hand over the teams above us.
For
several key saves, getting more aggressive off of his
line, and his first clean sheet of the season, man
of the match goes to Darin Cooper.

3 vs. Arsenal
0
|
Perfect
weather for a game of football, even for an old Englishman
like Andrew, who prefers to play in weather fit only for
a duck.
The
Reds took the field for a 4:00PM showdown with Arsenal,
and quickly seized control of the game. With Arsenal on
their heels from our quick counter attacks, Jimmy Deutsch
snuck in at the far post and nailed a header from a Scotty
Merrill corner kick. 8 minutes in and no doubt as to where
this match was going.
The
Red's continued to dominate and create dangerous attacks,
and were rewarded with a PK when Jimmy Deutsch was taken
down in the box after slicing threw the defense on what
was a sure goal. James LaBar finished the PK with his usual
aplomb, beating the helpless keeper to the right side netting
and staking the Red's to a 2-0 lead.
The
game heated up at the end of the 1st, when 2 players from
each team were yellow carded after a bruising tackle from
Franklin Young, left one of Arsenals players on his back
side. Both teams calmed down and played a bit more tentatively
to open the 2nd half. The Reds continued with dangerous
counter attacks and were turned away each time from some
gutsy plays by the Arsenal keeper, and some unlucky near
misses that clearly beat the keeper. Lano was finally rewarded
for all of his hard work and put the Red's out in front
3-0 with a strike to the lower left corner that clearly
demoralized the opposition.
The
rest of the half was an exercise in defending the long ball
as Arsenal tried their best to get some kind of attack going.
The game ended without incident and with both teams leaving
behind any ill-will from our 1st half confrontation. The
Red's left the field with a well deserved 3-0 victory, and
another week at the top of the standings.
Lano gets our Man of the Match
honors for finally getting the monkey off of his back, and
putting the ball in the net. His hard work kept the team
going and was the main force behind many of our attacks
today. The season only gets more fun as the "Rubber Match"
between the Red's and the Predators is finally at hand.
We've each taken a match from each other, and this one has
the look of a "Classic". See you next week at "High-Noon".

0
|
It
was another beautiful Sunday with the Sand Dragons fielding
a squad ready for action.
The
Dragons started the match with control and possession as
the riding theme. With about 15 minutes into the match Dragons
forward, Thong Nguyen, fielded the ball inside the Vikings
goal area and finished it with power and confidence as he
made the Vikings pay for their defensive lapse.
Then,
just as the Dragon's sideline was about to sub out Geordie
Wood...he scored from a ball that started with the Dragons
keeper. The distribution from the Dragons keeper went to
Thong, who took the ball all the way down to the Vikings
end line and crossed it over to Geordie. Geordie knew what
to do as he finished the ball cleanly, leaving the Vikings
emotionally deflated. Then...he subbed out.
About
5 minutes later Alvaro Romero put a perfectly placed ball
over from the touch line as Paul Grimaldi nailed a classic
header into the Vikings net.
A
minute later, Kiko Fierin was called for a foul in the Dragon's
box and the referee pointed to the spot as the linesman
claimed he saw Kiko put up his hands and push the Viking's
forward. As the Vikings forward readied his kick keeper
Goge Johl lunged forward just as the kick was taken and
the Vikings forward smashed the ball dead center, hit the
bar, and was out for a goal kick.
10
minutes later with Geordie back in the game, Timmy Hume
put a ball over and Geordie was again the man of the moment
as he headed the ball in for his second and the Dragon's
fourth of the match.
At
the 44th minute the Vikings were called for a hand ball
inside the penalty box. Kiko fired the ball into the side
netting leaving no doubt who was in control of the match,
giving the Dragons thier 5th goal of the day. The penalty
shot was pretty good. Kiko knew it was gonna be pretty good.
He gave it 110%. And as he scored he gestured over to the
Dragons sideline and shouted in Flemish, "There is
no "I" in the word "Team".
The
second half saw Tod Ross move into goal for the Dragons
although the half was played with relatively no action in
front of the Dragon's goal. The Sandy Men found themselves
with little incentive to move the entire team up the field
to support a scoring effort. It wasn't until the 83rd minute
that the Dragons found the Viking's net for the final blow.
The Dragons put Geordie back in for the final 10 minutes
of the match to see if he had the minerals to score a hat
trick. 3 minutes later it was Geordie Wood
who, from about 45 yards out, got his foot to the ball and
put it past an out of position Viking keeper for the final
goal of the match and a hat trick as he locked up his spot
as the Sand Dragon's Man of the
Match!

Vipers
1 vs. Longbow FC 2
The Vipers came into the Match against Longbows FC with
some new players for the depleted troops, with Andrew
Pascoe coming over from the Sand Dragons, and Steve Bruns
from the Cobras. Both made immediate positive impacts
on the field.
The
Vipers scored early in the match to take a 1-0 lead. Andrew
sent a wicked corner kick that curved and went untouched
into the net.
The
Vipers saw an improved offense keep most of the play on
the side of the opponents, but were not able to capitalize
on some golden opportunities, including two breakaways
on the goalie.
Mid-way
through the 1st half, the Longbows struck on a header
in the box. At the end of the 1st half, with seconds away
from the whistle, James Cagle saved a point blank shot
to keep the tie going into half-time.
The
2nd half saw more Viper control of the midfield, with
Rudy Torres, Scott Wolf, Steve Bruns, and Andrew Pascoe
controlling midfield play. The back line of Glennon Miller,
Mike Jones, John Ridgway, and David Millar-Haskell continued
doing a solid job.
A
few more golden opportunities to score for the Vipers
were not capitalized, and as we all know a common theme
in sports is when you don't capitalize on golden opportunities,
this usually comes back to haunt you.
And
haunt the Vipers it did, as the Longbows scored with just
minutes left in the match, from a long distance shot.
Another difficult loss for a squad that plays hard every
game.
Andrew
Pascoe was chosen as Man of the
Match, not only for his goal, but due to his leadership
skills on the filed, and because of his constant hustle
play on the mid-line driving himself to the point of exhaustion.

5 vs. Wankershire
United 0
|
Into
the heart of our schedule, with nothing but top teams to
contend with; was Andrew & Scott's message to the boys today.Wankershire
United came into our match undefeated at 4-0, and only having
given up 2 goals to the opposition.
The
Red's were licking our chops to finally test ourselves against
the best that 1st Division had to offer.Let's go on the
record here: THE REDS ARE THE TEAM TO LOOK OUT FOR IN 1ST
DIVISION! The Red's took the field with a purpose that they
haven't displayed until this match. The assault took less
than 5 minutes when Jason Green struck on a break away,
displaying the speed and control at pace that the Red's
have been waiting for. The first half was dominated by the
Reds, as we consistently won every 50/50 ball and pressured
the oppositions defense with speed.
Scotty
Merrill dropped our 2nd goal in after Jimmy Deutsch broke
down the defense and left their goal wide open for Scotty
to slot one home. The Reds agreed at the half that if we
scored early in the 2nd, Wankershire United would give up.
True to form, Jason Green placed a perfect shot past their
keeper after a brilliant assist from Lano, who unselfishly
missed a wide open goal to allow Jason to have the glory.
As
Wankershire struggled, the Reds kept pouring it on with
Lano again receiving an assist after unselfishly missing
another wide open goal to allow Jimmy Deutch to score our
5th goal of the day. Amazingly, with minutes left in the
game, Lano managed another assist while watching from the
sidelines as Scotty Merrill scored on a break-away to complete
the route at 5-0. A complete effort by the Red's who broke
out their "ALL Whites", today and assured themselves of
another week at the top of the standings.
Man
of the Match honors go to Jason Green, who is finally
starting to get fit from his leg injury, and is becoming
a nightmare for other teams to match-up with. A close 2nd
goes to Lano with a club record 5 assists...

Sand
Dragons 4 vs. Payson FC
1
|
It
was a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon as the Sand Dragons
faced a strengthened Payson FC side this weekend.
Missing
from the side were the injured reserve, Scotty Peloquin,
Dieter Welle, & Mike Perea. Also out for the weekend
was Andy Honker, Alvaro Romero-missed flight, & Milton
Melo-missed first 70 minutes. The Dragons still had a few
subs in hand and Milton played the last 20 minutes to give
a couple of players a well deserved break.
The
Dragons came out with all guns blazing. Players quickly
took control of the match with some great passing and defensive
play throughout the field. The first payoff came at 7 minutes
in from Thong Nguyen as he knocked home the games first
goal with a blast from in front of the goal mouth.
The
Sandy men quickly took advantage of their momentum as Paul
Grimaldi put in the second goal from outside the box with
a shot that found the side netting and left the Payson side
deflated for the time being.
The
third goal came at about 22 minutes when Geordie Wood hit
a ball into the upper netting and sealed the fate of Payson,
or so it would seem. Payson,
to their credit never gave up and had a handful of opportunities
but were denied by the Dragon's keeper and defense for the
rest of the half.
The
warm weather took a toll on the Dragon's side as they looked
tired and spent as half-time approached. With a brief rest
and water at the half, the Dragons were ready to put on
a flurry of attacks at the start of the second half. That's
exactly what they did and at about 10 minutes in, Paul Grimaldi
scored his second goal of the match with a rocket of a shot
that left Payson's keeper with nothing to do but watch the
ball bounce off his hands into the net.
As
the match continued the Dragon's kept in control much of
the time until Kiko Fierin, the Dragons sweeper, decided
to test his dribbling skills. Kiko weaved his way from the
back, one by one, past 7 men. As he approached the 8th man
he forgot that the 8th man you dribble, in a row, usually
has a club with him. Kiko was dispossessed and an ensuing
through ball caught everyone by surprise as Tod Ross, now
in as Keeper, had to spread himself to try and stop the
ball but it found the net just at the post.
Tod
made several saves as all of the Dragons played particularly
well as they worked through the adversity of the last minute
missing players. Paul Grimaldi played exceptionally well
for the Dragon side and his two goals for the day locked
up his selection as Man of the Match
vs. Payson FC. Alvaro Romero was a close runner up for man
of the match, as he made sure the Beer was there even
if HE wasn't.

Vipers
1 vs. Samba 5
The
Vipers played against a stacked deck on Sunday with several
of the key players out for injuries and work. SUASL also
disqualified Mike Jones for a double yellow from
last season. He had served the game suspension
last season while still with Europa but didn't pay the
$25 and he / SDFC was never notified except for a simple
entry on the refs player sheet. The ref agreed to ask
Pedro on our behalf but Pedro wouldn't consider it.
This
could have been handled so much better and in fact infuriated
many of our team members as we were short to begin with.
To add insult to injury, there were quite a few controversial
hand balls that were never called against Samba but they
were always called against the Vipers. The ref seemed
to want a fair game but the linesmen were pathetic.
The
game started with one sub for the Vipers and Coach Albert
rotated the opportunity to rest as well as could be expected.
The Vipers tried to fall back on defense but Samba got
a header early. We held out for another 25 minutes without
a goal and then Mark Jensen
pushed up and received a pass from Franklin Young or Will
Sisneros and hammered it in the goal. It would be our
only goal. The first half ended 3 to 1. In the second
half with no subs in the afternoon heat Samba opened it
up about 25 minutes into the half. There were simply too
many things to over come to have any chance of a win or
even a tie. I'm not even sure of the final score is correct.
Either way it's a stinging loss. To most of Samba's players
credit, it was a pretty clean game... not that we were
a threat.

Cobras
2 vs. Arizona United 1
Cobras
started the game without a couple of regulars (Simon and
Andy), but got good contributions from everyone that was
there, including Ian, who helped shore up the middle in
his first game.
Cobras
dominated the first half, and Ivan got them started early
with a nice goal, followed a few minutes later by a goal
from Walter who had just come on the field a few seconds
earlier.
It
was the second time this season Walter scored quickly
off the bench, NICE JOB!! Cobras controlled the game after
the half, but pressure from AZ United increased as they
threw 7-8 men forward in an attempt to even the score.
They
pulled one back with about 20 minutes to go, and that's
the way it ended. Man of the Match
goes to Milton who controlled the D and took a couple
of hits doing so.
Cobras
have a BYE next week and will see you all at the BBQ!

Venom
4 vs. Zacatepet
1
|
The
Reds matched-up against a familiar opponent this Sunday,
and reminded Zacatepet, that the first 2 losses they suffered
to us, were going to be repeated. Zacatepet fell back on
last season's tactics of playing everyone back to limit
our offense and speed, and hoped that the long ball would
give them the break that they needed. Their strategy rewarded
them with a 1-0 half-time lead, but left them tired and
unable to respond to the constant pressure that we applied
in the 2nd half.
Scotty
Merrill got things rolling early in the 2nd half with a
strike that found the lower left corner of the netting,
and knocked the confidence completely out of the Zacatepet
side. Alex followed soon after with an identical strike
from 20yds out that ripped through the keepers hands and
staked the Reds to a 2-1 lead.
Andrew
and Scott drove the point home during the half-time break,
that Zacatepet's keeper was suspect, and shots from outside
the box would be rewarded. The Reds responded by shelling
the goal at every opportunity and left the Zacatepet keeper
and defense wishing for help. Jimmy Deutsch kept the pressure
on with a ball that he carried from midfield that was awarded
as an "own goal" as Jimmy's shot deflected off a defender
and found the strings.
A
3-1 hole was too much for Zacatepet's team as they returned
to their cheap fouls and theatrical dives to try to stop
the onslaught. The Reds removed any players with bookings
as Zacatepet's favorite tactic of baiting and chipping our
players continued. James LaBar put the final nail in the
coffin on a 3v1 breakaway that left the keeper guessing
as James calmly slipped it in near post. The result was
as expected, and the Reds served notice by going through
the lighter part of our schedule without a loss.
The
rest of the schedule gets fun as the top 4 teams in the
division finally meet and get to decide who carries home
the hardware. Man-of-the-match
honors go to Scotty Merrill. His equalizer provided the
spark that got the Reds going and kept us at the top of
the standings...

1 vs. FC Trango
1
|
Our
game went ahead and at the start the field condition was
very good despite heavy rain falling. The opening period
for us was quite good with some good passing and movement
with Jimmy, Jason and Dylan all getting down the line and
putting good crosses in which unfortunately we did'nt attack
too well. Our oppontents took the lead on about 25 mins
totally against the run of play when a cross was met by
a Trango forward who hooked his foot at the ball and it
went high over Courtney and into the net. We continued to
play our football and switched Lano out to the left hand
side and he and Jimmy combined well on a couple occasions
to get into the left hand side of the box and put balls
over. One such attack produced a hand ball in the box and
from the subsiquent penalty James tied the score for us.
By half time the rain had stopped and we were looking forward
to getting back on with the game and use our passing and
movement to overcome our opponents. Just prior to the secound
half starting the sky turned black it all went quiet and
then as the ref blew to start the half the sky's opened
up and it pi--ed down the whole secound half. I thought
well since we are playing in English weather we just as
well play the English way, so we increased the tempo and
started bombarding there box with balls and bodies. This
gave us almost total control over the whole half but had
them retreating into their final third and whilst we threw
everything except the kitchen sink at them our oppontents
threw everthing they had in the way of our shots ect. By
the time the game was over we had hit the woodwork 3 times
and had a goal dissallowed plus the refs failed to see their
keeper catch a shot over his line. For us this was like
a loss and dropped points will mean we really need to win
all remaining games to be sure of winning the division.
There were no poor performances for us which is always pleasing,
Alex our new guy had a good debut, and there were excellent
performances from Jeff, Chris, Lano and Dylan.
Man of the Match this week though goes to James who
cut out several attacks before they became a real danger,
organised the team well and confidently tucked the penalty
away.

Sand
Dragons 2 vs. Vipers
0
|
It
was a beautiful day for the annual inter-squad league match
between the Vipers and Sand Dragons. Once again the Sand
Dragons dominated the game winning for the 3rd straight
season.
The
Sand Dragons came out with excellent passing and control
to find the Vipers packing the defensive half with all of
their players for the duration of the match. The Vipers
played with tenacity as the Dragons were frustrated for
the first 70 minutes of play, coming close to scoring a
number of times but not able to put together enough to score.
In
the 70th minute Geordie Wood received a pass from Kiko Fierin
who brought the ball up from the back unchallenged. Kiko
put a super ball up to Geordie who took the pass in stride
and attacked the defense slotting the ball into the side
netting past a helpless Viper Keeper.
As
the match continued the Sand Dragons threw all their players
forward as Paul Grimaldi received the ball inside the Viper
penalty area and was hacked down as the referee called for
a penalty kick.
Kiko
Fierin stretched his penalty streak further as he confidently
hit the ball towards the goal. James Cagle, the Viper's
keeper managed to get a paw to the ball but not enough to
stop the determined Fierin as the Dragons put the final
nail in.
The
post match MOM forum names Geordie Wood as the Sand Dragon's
man of the match for his 70th
minute goal and excellent play for this week's match.

Vipers
0 vs. Sand Dragons 2
The
Vipers were to play this match with 3/4 of their front-line
out. Their head coach Andy Pascoe played for the Dragons
as Asst. Coach Albert Mercado led the team.
The
Vipers had at least 4 starters out and had only 1 substitute.
And they were playing the Sand Dragons, who were at full
strength. The Vipers held them to 0-0 until the last 20
minutes, when they scored 2 goals, one on a PK that goalie
James Cagle almost blocked. Every guy followed the defensive
game plan, primarily set up by Franklin Young.
Every
guy played hard, every guy played well, and every guy
played with a lot of heart. If we could hand the "Man
of the Match" to the entire team, then we would. It was
evident to see from the sidelines, and from anyone watching
or participating, the Vipers left it all on the field.
Franklin Young gets the man of
the match for the Vipers for his leadership, game
plan and play. Good job Vipers. One and all.

Cobras
2 vs. Pumas International
4
The
Cobras suffered their first defeat of the season this
Sunday against division leaders Puma International in
a game that they felt they could have won.
The
team started out strong keeping the play in Puma's end,
but went down 1-0 about 25 minutes in on a penalty kick.
The foul also meant the ejection of Jason Benge so the
Cobras had to play the rest of the match with ten men.
The
Cobras evened the match a few minutes later on a nice
finish from Spencer Brown who slotted a loose ball into
the back of the net. The momentum of the match shifted
for the next few minutes as the Cobras had the Puma team
on their heels, but Puma went up 2-1 before half-time
from a corner kick.
The
Cobras started the second half well, but a missed handball
call from the referee resulted in a third Puma goal. Puma
added a fourth towards the end of the match as the Cobras
pushed forward trying to equalize with only ten men, which
often left the back exposed.
With just minutes left, however, the Cobras cleverly added
a second tally. Puma cleared the ball out of bounds on
the touchline, and Simon Roberts quickly found a ball
(not the game ball that we had been playing with) and
threw it in to Spencer Brown, who promptly turned and
struck a long shot past the Puma keeper.
All
in all it was a tough match that left the team wondering
what might have been with a full squad of 11 men for ninety
minutes. Everyone on the field demonstrated a lot of heart,
and gave it everything they had. The season is by no means
over and the Cobras relish another shot at the Puma squad
in the playoffs. A special runner-up selection for man
of the match this week goes to Simon Roberts for his exhibition
of gamesmanship, but the winner for the Cobra's MOM
is Spencer Brown.

Sand
Dragons 2 vs. McDowell Mt. Chiro
1
|
The
weather was beautiful as the Sand Dragons took the field
on Sunday. The Dragons dominated the first half with strong
passing and plenty of movement from all the players. As
the half wore on it was apparent that the Dragons were becoming
frustrated with their lack of goals from less than inspired
attacks, although they continued to win 50/50 balls in the
midfield. Timmy Hume had some especially hard tackles which
told the MMC's that they were in for a man's match today.
Mid-way through the half Colin Smith made a great run from
his defensive back position. He hit a rocket of a shot which
went 40 yards, about 2 feet from the ground the whole way,
just to knock the upright with a twang as the shot froze
everyone on the grounds. Tom Uczekaj among others also had
a few shots on goal, although none were converted.
The
second half showed the Dragons more inspired as the they
created even more opportunities. After several near misses
and some good saves by the MMC keeper, Timmy Hume put the
ball in the back of the net with a volley that was preceded
by 2 or 3 shots that kept bouncing back into the melee of
players in front of the goal. It was just as much relief
as joy that the Dragons scored after what seemed to be a
lifetime of near misses, poor shots, and good saves.
Nearly
10 minutes later Andy Honker got a ball played through and
he was off to the races as he nailed a ball from the top
of the box that hit and stuck in the side netting for the
Dragon's second goal and another historical moment for SDFC
as the goal was also Andy's second goal of the day for as
many teams. The post match MOM forum voted Timmy Hume as
the Dragon's Man of the Match
for his tough play in the midfield as well as breaking the
ice with a fine finish. Well done Sandy Men!

Vipers
0 vs. Payson FC 1
First
let me say that in soccer, some play for glory... some
play simply to have an activity to exercise... but the
men of the Viper's play for their love of the game. Except
for man of the match, this is one of the most difficult
game summary's we've ever had to write.
The game was played on the McDowell West field, where
the Premier Division plays. Payson has every game there
at 4:00. Jeff Johnson was back in the lineup and was Captain
for the game. Franklin Young didn't play because of a
nagging leg injury. All other players were present.
Payson added a few new players to their roster but most
of the old faces were there... including the one guy that
causes all the problems every game. He started by kicking
Will Bullock in the back of the legs only five minutes
into the game and eventually, after an altercation with
Yigael and Glennon, he was ejected on a Red Card.
Each team had several runs and there was one Will Bullock
to Will Sineros pass that everyone would love to have
back... it was just wide right. Captain Jeff Johnson caught
the goalie off his line and chipped one that bounced on
the hard surface and just cleared the bar. Rudy Torres
fired a PK that hit the cross bar so hard it bounced all
the way to the top of the 18 yard box where Mark "Wyzo"
Wysolmierski launched another over the bar. There was
good effort all around and Man
of the Match will have to be shared between goalie
James Cagle for his amazing stops all game long and David
Millar-Haskell who time and time again ran down Payson
players on a fast break. He was everywhere.
The game tie was broken in the 75th minute when a Payson
midfielder carried the ball all the way from the midfield
stripe to well within the 18 yard box. Will Bullock chased
him down from midfield from five yards back but was only
able to come along side. The man still managed to get
around defender Johnny Ridgway and shoot. James stopped
the rocket but it bounced only a foot in front of the
goal and the same Payson player just toed it in. It was
a game that was within the Viper grasp. They all played
to exhaustion, giving Their all but we just missed the
mark. Our love of the game will have us back on the pitch
at Copper Ridge next week against the Hardrockers at 12:00.
We hope to see you there.

Cobras
3 vs. Seytons 2
The
Cobras fought their way to a win on Sunday with a great
team effort. The team completely dominated the first half,
and saw their early pressure rewarded with a goal six
minutes in.
Spencer
Brown got his head on a corner kick and drove the ball
into the net. About a minute later, Andy Honker turned
on a bouncing ball at the top of the box and hit a half
volley into the far corner of the net.
The
Cobras spent the rest of the half in the Seytans' end
with the help of a solid defensive performance from the
back four, but could not manage any more goals before
the break.
After
last week's disappointing tie, the Cobras knew they needed
to come out strong in the second half and they did so.
The relentless pressure soon paid off, as Walter Houtz
pounced on a rebound coughed up by the opposing keeper
and put the team up 3-0. After extending their lead, the
Cobras held their composure, even when attack after attack
from the Seytans produced two goals, and did what they
had to do to secure the victory. That's three games without
a loss this season for the Cobra team. Man
of the Match this week for his constant hustle and
for putting in the game winner is Walter Houtz.

Venom
4 vs. Babylon 1
|
This
was a very comprehensive performance, all 5 goals going
to Venom players, yes Damien I had to mention it, but why
can't you score one like that for us?.
We
changed the system, set out a plan, and stuck to it well,
we knew we had good individual players but today we really
started to play as a unit and the first half was full of
great flowing passing movements to open up the opponents.
Tim
Graefe scored on 21 minutes and that was closely followed
by a goal from Jens on 25 minutes. It was then that Damien
met a cross by our opponents and guided it in the far post
past Courtney who I am very sure had words with Damien on
their drive home. I refrained from what would have normally
being my first re action (scream shout and turn green) and
whilst thinking about what my options were for a reaction
Damien chased a 50/50 ball into the right corner and put
a cross over for Jens to score his second on 28 minutes.
The second half was one with a lot of changes and produced
just the one goal with Chris Farabee putting Jimmy through
with a neat ball.
Pleasing
was as I have said some very neat passing movements and
also the fact that our opponents were limited to only a
few speculative longer range efforts for the whole game.
Man of the Match
this week goes to Brian who held the defensive midfield
position for most of the game yet was consistently involved
in the early build up play for most of our moves. That's
3 out of 3 for the Venom team and whilst we know our most
difficult games are to come we ourselves continue to improve
and will fear no one in our quest for the Div 1 title.

Dragons 5 vs. Longbows FC
0
|
It was
a great day for football as the Dragons drew Longbows FC
for this week's match. Longbows were missing a few key players
as the Dragons won easily with 4 different players scoring
their first of the season. The Sand
Dragons fielded a full squad this weekend as only Kiko
and Dieter were out.
Geordie Wood opened up the season's scoring and finished
with ease after the Longbow keeper failed to hold a shot
from the field. Several players, Roel Bazuin, Kevin Hefner,
Andy Honker, Al Romero, Geordie Wood, Paul Grimaldi, and
Andrew Pascoe, made their season's debut with the team this
Sunday and played well for their efforts. It was Paul Grimaldi
that scored with a beauty of a header off a technically
good and clinically accurate cross from Roel to make
it 2 nil at the half.
Several
Incinerators players were overheard jeering from the sidelines
at half-time sounding a bit insecure over the thought of
a rematch in post-season play. The fans can't wait to see
a full Dragon side against
the division champs in what will prove to be a very different
match.
During
the second half the Dragons got back to business and after
few well placed passes Paul Grimaldi scored the Dragon's
third goal on his own. Tod Ross took over in goal as Andy
Honker and Nigel Forrest scored the last two on fine shots
that heard the fans screaming for more. The
passing out of the back was outstanding today and the whole
team really put on a passing show against the Longbows,
who never gave up.
The
end of the game left a few of the Dragon players with nothing
to do but kick the cat tonight when they think about the
sure goals they missed. Opportunities lost that could have
made this an even bigger result. The
post-match MOM committee picks
Paul Grimaldi as the Sand Dragons Man
of the Match, with two excellent goals and some solid
play in his debut with the Sandy Men.

Vipers
0 vs. Blasters 3
The
Vipers put forth a good try but
fell short today against the Blasters, 0 - 3. The Blasters
are every bit the opponent they were last season when
they went all the way to the division final. Excepting
a few small shoves and some mumbling it was a clean and
well played game.
The 8am start time didn't help our cause as Scott, Will
and Rudy all arrived too late to get in a proper warm-up,
all taking the filed about 20 minutes into the game. Most
of the team seemed flat and still fighting off morning
cobwebs through most of the first half. Also, not having
defender Jeff Johnson on the pitch today made the defense
a little less solid.
Several players had good days on the field. Franklin,
Scott and Rudy once again turned in fine performances
but if it weren't for stellar defense by goalie James
Cagle and fullback Mike Jones the score could have been
much worse. James made several great saves and Jonesy
continually showed us his speed, recovering on "D" nicely
every time.
Jonesy
made several important slides and headers to win the ball
when the other defenders were caught up field. He even
moved forward and let free a nice rocket... just wide.
For his effort today all agree Mike Jones is the Viper
Man of the Match.
The
Vipers should hold their heads high even on this loss
as they cut the Blaster outcome from last season more
than in half. It's a squad still growing and developing
with a bright future ahead. Let's hope the Dragon squad
can repeat last years game and once again get vengeance
for their Viper brothers.

Cobras
1 vs. Sidewinders 1
The
Cobras had a disappointing tie
this weekend after dominating the majority of the game
against a team that beat them 8-0 last season.
The
first half was definitely all Cobras, with the opposition
having no shots on goal. With the ball in the opponent's
half the Cobras had plenty of chances, but could only
manage to tally a single strike, as Andy Honker finished
a fine crossing ball to the back post from Dennis Verheijde.
Unfortunately,
scoring only the single goal proved costly, as the Cobras
started the second half flat, and the Sidewinders tied
the match on a miss-hit cross that the wind took into
the back of the net.
Relentless
pressure from the Cobras followed, but the frame of the
goal and several spectacular saves kept the score knotted
at one a piece. This one was a game to learn from, as
the Cobras need to play consistently and finish their
chances.
The
game was not without its positives, as the team often
passed the ball around well and maintained possession.
Ivan Valdez, Simon Roberts, Steve Bruns, and Laszlo Oberlander
all put in fine performances, but the Man
of the Match goes to Milton
Melo for his strong defensive efforts.

Venom
1 vs. Inter d Arizona 0
|
What
looked like total domination in the opening 15 minutes turned
out to be anything but in a disappointing game for the Venom
team. During the opening minutes it seemed our midfield
were pushed up and were finding the forwards frequently
with good passing. Our forwards were beating defenders and
putting good balls in and it was only minus a goal or two.
In
a bizarre move we seemed on mass to decide that we had done
enough in the opening minutes and should see what our opponents
were like and so we offered them to attack us by retreating
about 15 20 yards per player. Attack our opponents did,
and when we did get the ball back we seemed to want to further
increase there opportunities by playing short square balls
across the backline for them to pick up.
Late
in the half we went one up when Jimmy received the ball
on our right hand side and beat a couple defenders before
slotting it home from a tight angle.
The second half was better in that we limited them to two
speculative shots from distance which were of little concern
to us. The half was played within the central 50 yards of
the field with both teams trying to cancel out each other.
Fortunately we had our goal by then and a win is a win and
I should, I guess, be happy that we can play poorly and
win as this is the first time we have been unable to score
at least two goals in all the wins we had last year and
this.
Plus
points were that Jason Green played about 40 minutes in
total after being out with a broken leg for several months
now, and from here on it will surely only get better and
we will have his services for an increasing amount of time
as the next few weeks go on.
Man of the Match goes to Jeff
Johnson who has only played 3 games during his life at left
back but all three have being to a high standard and on
Sunday he had their most used player to contend with and
did so in exemplary fashion.
If
this is as disappointing as our season gets then I am very
sure we will all take it. It was very noticeable yesterday
that we were getting club players going from one game to
another to support the clubs teams. Good support helps in
winning the tight games and I was amazed at James Cagle's
ability to project his voice for 4 games and I might add
a little jealous that I am unable to do that. He was beginning
to be a little harder to understand by the time the Dragons
were into their second half, but by that time he had had
the odd tipple or two. Nice to see all those who gave support
it should be a great season, see everyone at our new location
Wed night 7 pm, check the website out for maps
and directions etc.

Sand
Dragons 0 vs. Incinerators
4
|
It
was a hard fought game against the Division Champions who
last season defeated the Blasters 5-2 in the semifinals
and the Blarney Boys 4-0 in the final to claim the Fall
2002 Cup.
The Sand Dragons played the game with no subs and their
2nd keeper Tod Ross on the field to make up the numbers.
"Iron Man" Dieter Welle also played although nursing
an injury. The Incinerators took advantage of some mix up
coverage in the defense that allowed them to convert on
two scrap goals in front of the Dragon goalmouth in the
first half.
Goalkeeper
Goge Johl was kept busy and had over 20 saves for the match.
In the second half the Dragons continued to press the issue
but couldn't get enough offense going to threaten a score.
Goge was working on his best Peter Schmeichel imitation
making multiple saves on an attack that left Dieter Welle
sprawled on the pitch as Dieter aggravate his previous injury.
As many of the Dragon players stopped assuming the Incinerators
would play the ball out, the play continued and after 2
point blank saves by the Dragon keeper, a third man ran
onto the ball and put the game away for the defending champs.
The Dragons played the last 30 minutes with only 10 men
on the pitch.
The
dragons will be at full strength next week as work commitments
end and last minute signings take hold. Kudos goes to Tod
Ross who epitomized the never say die attitude of the Dragons
who generally had a decent match except for the garbage
goals allowed. Tod is the Sand Dragon's Man
of the Match for his 90 minutes of body crunching, nonstop
running, and do it or die attitude.

Vipers
3 vs. Mirage 2
The
Vipers drew Mirage for their season opener at the new
fields, Copper Ridge. The new field is hard... like hay
on rocks, and it's even further from where we all live
than Mcdowell Mt.
Location
played only a small part in the victory as Mirage had
to start with only 9 players. They were up to 11 within
10 minutes and had a sub before the half. But the hungry
Viper squad took advantage of the situation and scored
quickly.
The
first goal of the game came from a beautiful left foot
cross by Will Bullock to Mark Jensen who was perfectly
positioned for a killer header to the left side of the
goal. Mark said the Mirage goalie's eyes were huge and
he just froze because there was nothing he could do. The
Vipers and fans went wild after seeing the sweet first
goal of the season.
Several
minutes later Franklin Young scored the next goal on a
beautiful 30 yard crossing shot from left to right. The
ball actually went right off the goalies hands into the
upper right corner of the goal.
Mark
"Chambo" Chambers nailed the last Viper goal of the day
on a breakaway. He's always been known for his speed and
he showed us again just how fast that is. Mirage did manage
to get a toe poke goal before the half on a mishandled
ball just in front of the goal. They added another in
the second half and threatened to tie the game but the
Vipers played hard as Franklin controlled play in the
midfield the whole game. When Mirage was threatening,
he fell back and closed down the threat. For his goal
and second half defensive effort, Franklin is the Viper
Man of the Match. Well done
Vipers!

Cobras
3 vs. Stars of Babylon 1
The Cobras started the season in
resounding fashion by going up 1 nil in the first minute
on a breakaway goal by Jason Benge. Jason added his second
a short while later to put the team up by 2.
The
Cobras dominated most of the first half, but a defensive
breakdown and questionable non call on an offsides led
to a goal for the Stars of Babylon.
The
Cobras responded however, and tallied their third goal
of the match towards the end of the first half as a long
free kick from the back found Alex Roberts who calmly
slid the ball into the back of the net. The Cobras continued
to dominate the game in the second half and keeper Darin
Cooper saved a penalty kick to prevent any change in momentum.
Solid
defensive play kept the opposition from any more threatening
chances and the Cobras should have put a few more on the
board. The score could have easily been 5 or 6 to 1. Man
of the match for his two goals is Jason Benge. This
was a great start and the first of many wins to come.

Venom
4 vs. DXI Trojans 0
|
Venom's
first game of the season was against a team that struggled
last season and DXI showed little signs of that changing
this time around.
The Venom played some very good possession stuff without
really threatening too much in the opening period mainly
due to some poor quality crossing. They went ahead, though,
from an absolute corker of a goal. Scotty Merrill hit a
half volley from 40 yards out into the top corner of the
net.
That's the way it was at half time but two goals in the
opening 20 minutes of the second half put the game away
as a contest. The first came through Neil Ellefsen who worked
himself some space into the box and slotted it home.
The
second came from Tim Graefe who beat two defenders before
finishing in style. A forth was added late on by Neil Ellefsen
and the Venom could have added more late on but for some
strange refereeing decisions.
All in all a very comfortable first game with some good
performances but none better than Tim Graefe who showed
his full range of passing, great strength and control and
capped of with class finishing and so he gets Man
Of The Match for the Venom side.
